SUBJECT: Accept Contributions to County Home Delivered Meals(Meals on Whee s) Program
SPECIFIC REQUEST(S)OR RECOMMENDATION(S)&BACKGROUND JUSTIFICATION
RECOMMENDATION(S):
ACCEPT contributions totaling of$53,764.23 on behalf of the County Senior Nutrition (Meals on Wheels),
from Meals on Wheels of Contra Costa, Inc to reimburse the County for providing each Meals on Wheels
participant countywide with an ongoing supply of 6 shelf stable, nutritious emergency meals.
FISCAL IMPACT:
This contribution reimburses the County for the actual cost of providing 14,808 shelf stable nutritious meals
during fiscal year 2007-08, delivered to more than 1,200 Meals on Wheels participants countywide as E-
Packs of six meals each, twice during the year, through the countywide Meals on Wheels Program
administered by the Public Health Division of Contra Costa Health Services Program.
BACKGROUND/REASON(S) FOR RECOMMENDATION(S):
The Board of Directors of Meals on Wheels of Contra Costa agreed to fund the cost of this project on an
ongoing basis from its private sector fundraising activities on behalf of our countywide Meals on Wheels
Program. Meals on Wheels of Contra Costa, Inc. is a charitable nonprofit coalition of public and private
nonprofit organizations, founded in 1990 by two County managers, from the Health Services and
Employment and Human Services Departments, to develop on-going and stable private sector funding for
Meals on Wheels services delivered to homebound elders in our county.
The E-Pack program was conceived by County Senior Nutrition Program staff to insure that homebound
Meals on Wheels participants have a fresh supply of high quality, nutritious and shelf stable meals on hand,
in the event that a major public emergency that prevents regular Meals on Wheels deliveries. The California
Department of Aging lists our program amongst the`Best Practices"of pro rams/statewide.
