BACKGROUND: The Deputy District Attorney— Basic Level classification is the journey level prosecutor position in the Deputy District Attorney extended-range deep class. As entry level Fixed Term Deputy DA's seek to promote to the Basic Level and the volume of work in the District Attorney's Office continues to increase, so does the need for positions requiring advanced, specialized legal skills. FISCAL IMPACT: The total annual cost associated with this action is $155,388. However, from Anti-Gang Grant Funding in the amount of$136,503, and cost savings totaling $26,442 from P300's #20417 and #20418 (9/18/07), there is a net savings of$7,557 from the 3 P300's (20417, 20418, 20419). CONSEQUENCE OF NEGATIVE ACTION: If this action is not approved, the Contra Costa County District Attorney's Office will have fewer positions in which to promote the best qualified attorneys. This compromises the department's ability to retain qualified employees. In the long term, this could adversely affect the quality of work within the District Attorney's Office and pose a potential reat to public safety of the citizens of Contra Costa County.
