BACKGROUND: The Deputy District Attorney—Basic Level classification is the journey level prosecutor position in the Deputy District Attorney extended-range deep class. As entry level Fixed Term Deputy DA's seek to promote to the Basic Level and the volume of work in the District Attorney's Office continues to increase, so does the need for positions requiring advanced, specialized legal skills. FISCAL IMPACT: These actions result in a cost savings of$20,544, due to the downgrading of a Senior Deputy DA position to a Deputy DA—Basic Level. CONSEQUENCE OF NEGATIVE ACTION: If this action is not approved, the Contra Costa County District Attorney's Office will have fewer positions in which to promote the best qualified attorneys. This compromises the department's ability to retain qualified employees. In the longterm, this could adversely affect the quality of work within the District Attorney's Office and pose a potential thr at to public safety of the citizens of Contra Costa County.
