THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS
CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, CALIFORNIA
Adjournment September 26,2006
On this day the Board of Supervisors adjourned this meeting in honor of John A. Nejedly Oct.
22, 1914 - Sept. 19, 2006 Resident of Walnut Creek John A. Nejedly passed away in Walnut
Creek Tuesday, Sept. 19, 2006 at the age of 91. A resident of Walnut Creek since 1938, and a
native of Oakland, CA, John was a WWII veteran serving in the Pacific theatre as a Japanese
language officer until he was honorably discharged in 1946. He graduated from the University of
California, Berkeley with a Bachelor's of Science Degree in 1935, and a Law Degree from Boalt
Hall in 1941. John retired in 1980 after serving as Walnut Creek City Attorney, Contra Costa
County District Attorney and County Counsel, and then as California State Senator. Throughout
John's legislative career he consistently and successfully pursued the goal of providing the wisest
management of the public's natural resources for the future, and was most proud of having been
named one of"Ten Outstanding Americans in the Field of Conservation" in 1966. He was the
author of the sentencing reform of the state's criminal justice sentencing procedures that was
known as the Determinate Sentencing Act, which fixed terms for criminal sentences. At that time
this was the most significant legislative development in California's criminal justice system in
over 60 years. John was an Eagle Scout, an honor and commitment that he maintained
throughout his life and something he encouraged other young men to pursue. John was a great
man who leaves behind his own legacy of public service, and also a strong encouragement for
others to give all that they can to their community. John was very proud of his family, including
his daughter, Mary Piepho (David); sons, Jim Nejedly(Jaine) and John T. Nejedly(Kate); step-
son, Greg Rossi (Helen); and grandchildren, Colt, Kathleen, Kristina, Stevie, Connor, Greg, John
C., Mariah, and Sarah.
