SEPTEMBER 15 TO OCTOBER 15, 2006 AS
HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH
IN CONTRA COSTA COUNTY
WHEREAS, .Hispanic 1-leritage Month begins oil September 15 to commemorate the anniversary of
independence for five Latin Aiiierican countries — Costa Rica, Tl Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras,
and Nicaragua; and, in addition; Mexico declared its independence on September 16, and Chile on
September 18, and Christopher Columbus, sailing under the flag of Spain, lanc}cd in the New
World on October 12, 149-9, and;
WHEREAS, the first exploration of Contra Costa County bV non-Native rriericans was performed in
1772 by the Fages r�,xpedition ciut of Moiit&ey,z California when the party explored the area ftc>m
the eastern shoreline of San Francisco Bay to the area that is.ilow Antioch, and;
WHEREAS, the juan Bautista De Anna ended his explorations for:the Crown of Spain at. the ]lead of the
San Joaquin-Sacramento river 'Delta in eastern Contra Costa County in 1776, the saint year
rnerican<,colonists declared their independence front England;wild;
WHEREAS, Spanish and 'Mexican soldiers find ranchers weir iwardcd Spanish :incl ille�;ican land grants
in the `county, including Rancho Canada de los Vaqueros, Rancho Los Nkganos, Rancho Los
ttledanos, Rancho-Mi4niel, Rancho Monte de Diablo, and the two Ranchos San Ramon, and;
WHEREAS, inan}� of the names of:many of Contra Costa's'principal communities are named after
Spanish and Mexican pioneers o.r,are derived from Spanish ti7rirds,.u>cliiding Nlartinez, J\loraga, F:1

WHEREAS, more than 35 inillion, people identified ;themselves pis Is Latino on the 2000
Census, and Hispanic:/Latino is one of .the fastestF;growing papulation segments in the United
States, and;
WHEREAS; according to the U.S. Census, in Contra Costa Cou.i�q.214,434 residents, or 1 out of every 5

people, are of Latino descent, and;:
WHEREAS, Hispanic ethnic groups continue to grew and`are a vital segment 9f.Contra Costa County°'s
;economic, social and cultural life;
NOW,'THEREFOR'E :<BE IT RESOLVED that. the Board of Supervisors of Contra Costa County, .
California sloes hereby proclaiin September 15 to October 15, 2006 as Hispanic Heritage
Month, and calls on the pep ple of Contra Costa Couiit�j, county agencies, school districts and
communities in Contra Costa County, use their resources to highlight Hispanic individuals and their
'Contributions to the county and'to observe this month with appropriate progr'9nis and activities.
