SPECIFIC REQUEST(S)OR RECOMMENDATION(S)&BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION
RECOMMENDATION
1. APPROVE the Second Amendment to Lease with Josephine Heruth-Nation to extend the term
of the existing lease for the premises at 835 Castro Street, Martinez, from September 1, 2006 to
December 31, 2006, for continued occupancy by the Clerk-Recorder, under the terms and
conditions more particularly set forth in the Lease Amendment.
2. AUTHORIZE the Director of General Services, or designee, to EXECUTE the Second Lease
Amendment.
FINANCIAL IMPACT
Extending the term of this Lease was anticipated and budgeted in the Clerk-Recorder's requested FY
2006/2007 budget. The rent for the period from September 1, 2006 through December 31, 2006 will
be a total of$6,800.
BACKGROUND
The Clerk-Recorder has occupied the approximately 1,800 square feet of office space at 835 Castro
Street, Martinez since 1999. Its lease for this space expires on August 31, 2006. A new building for
the Clerk-Recorder/Elections department is currently under construction at 555 Escobar Street in
Martinez. The Clerk-Recorder intends to vacate the Castro Street property when the building on
Escobar is completed, but needs to remain in the Castro Street building beyond the current expiration
date. Approval of the Second Amendment to Lease will extend the term of the lease from September
1, 2006 to December 31, 2006, at a rental rate of $1,700 per month, and will provide office space to
support the Clerk-Recorder's operations until the new building is completed.
