FISCAL IMPACT: This contract is included in the Health Services Department Enterprise I budget. REASONS FOR RECOMMENDATIONSBACKGROUND: For several years the County haIi contracted with registries to provide temporary medical professionals to assist Contra Costa Regional Medical Center and Contra Costa Health Centers during peak loads, temporary absences, and emergency situations. There is a nationwide nursing and healthcare staff shortage, and in spite of persistent efforts to recruit nurses and other healthcare staff, the Department has experienced great difficulty in filling any vacant positions. Therefore, the Department has had to rely heavily on the registry services in order to provide quality-nursing care for patients. On January 24, 2006, the Board of Supervisors approved Contract #26-213-18 with KGI Inc. (dba Key Temps) for the period from January 1, 2006 through December 31, 2006, for the provision of temporary Registered Dental Assistant services at Contra Costa Regional Medical Center and Contra Costa Health Centers, during staff absences and vacancies. Due to a continuous increase in temporary absences and a shortage of registered Dental Assistants, County has requested and Contractor has agreed to provide additional temporary help services to cover critical areas at Contra Costa Regional Medical Center and Contra Costa health Centers. Approval of Contract Amendment Agreement #26-213-20 will allow the Contractor to provide additional temporary Dental Assistant coverage services through December 31, 2006.
