I will also be able to help the today's youth express their opinions and"ideas for a better and brighter future. I know that oftentimes, teenagers come across things that we don't necessarily like and have a vision of how it could be more beneficial. They talk about them, yet don't think that they can make a difference since they are so young and they are one person out of billions. In fact,,they hold the power to put their dreams/goals into action and reality. I am hoping that by getting the honor to serve on the board that I will be able to help ordinary teens achieve their goals. Z. There are many issues youth in my community face. The three most important are as follows: peer pressure, public influence, and materialism. I know that these are common problems because I see them everyday. Peer pressure must be stopped. Today, many teens around the community and even in schools are pressured by their peers to do something, buy something, act a certain way, or even look a specific way to"fit in." Oftentimes, people are given the' impression that if they don't buy their clothing or accessories from expensive name brands, they aren't cool enough to hang out with the"popular" group. Nowadays, youth are caught in the*position of competing for status with their wealth or what they own. Nevertheless, this is not what it is about. It is somewhat sad that today's generation is defined by the opinions and personality of their peers. This affects many students in both public and private schools. Public influence is another issue that 'involves the youth in today's society. The media and pop culture has really influenced this generation. The images and values that they promote are extremely dangerous and twisted. Even the abnormal images that are printed and published in magazines mislead youth and give them messages that they must look a certain way to be"hot"or their body must have a particular shape. All these"ideal" images are presented and affect the way teens think and act. A Hollywood star would be as skinny as a toothpick or have the latest Louis Vuitton bag. These false images can sometimes lead to health problems such as anorexia, bulimia, etc. Moreover, they shouldn't be stereotyping men and women as to what jobs or styles they should have and how they should look. Everyone is unique an individual. Not everyone should look alike or act alike because it is unrealistic. Not all girls are emotional, sensitive, cry easily, have blonde hair, and large chests; and not all men like sports, like violence, are aggressive, are tough, and are well built. Often these images are seen in the majority of magazines telling the public that that-is how they should be. More importantly, materialism has become a major issue in today's world. Youth put more effort and time into the latest gadgets and styles, burning through money as if there is no end. Kids today have become extremely caught up in material things. This is not right. Possessions is not what defines who were are as people and whether we have the best things doesn't matter in life;what truly matters is the people themselves. They are living, breathing, thinking human beings who can make a difference. Oftentimes, values are 0 sacrificed we lose sight of who we really are as people and as citizens. People become concerned only about themselves and forget to look at the person, the person inside. I am aware of all these issues that I have discussed because I have seen them pop up both in the community and in my school. 3. By being apart of CYC and becoming a commissioner, I think that I will be able to help voice the problems and issues that affect youth today and do my best to make sure everyone is represented and heard. I would also want to raise public awareness of these problems because sometimes people may not be aware that all of these matters actually exist and affect likeus all as a community. For ssues peer pressure, people need to stand up for themselves and not be afraid to be different or individuals. We are not all the same and what other people think-shouldn't matter to us because it's what we ourselves think that is important. More importantly, we must establish and stand by our values and not those of others. We don't live by the values of other people but our own. We shouldn't let what other people think get in the way of what we know is right. As a commissioner, we could give people ideas how to handle being in peer pressure situations and options of how to respond. Moreover,we must understand that material goods don't define who we are, but what really do are our personalities, the way we act, and the values we live by. It is important to let teens and youth around the community know this because they are the future and hold the key to other generations. They must know that they should always be themselves because that is the person everyone should get to know and get judged on, not the number of cool things that we own or how wealthy they are. Finally, the images that are promoted in magazines by the media today, aren't healthy nor are they real. They give youth the wrong idea.about what the world is really about. The majority of the world doesn't live like Hollywood celebrities and look like them. In addition, there is more than one beautiful, not everyone has to be blonde on skinny or rich, just themselves. It is important that people don't change themselves according to new styles or what is considered "In'" because they are temporary joys that last for a short time. Who we are is more important than what money can buy us or magazines can show because they only see the world one way:- wealth, beauty,mv fame, and glory. Letting people know this will help bring a better future for all people. 4. 1 have quite a few school and community activities that have helped me become the person that I am now and will benefit me as a CYC Commissioner. Throughout my junior high years, I have been a consistent member on the senior volleyball team. Being apart of this team has taught me about teamwork and the importance of communication. This could potentially help me as a commissioner because I can help to share some of the issues that are 0 affecting teens and youth in my community and bringthem to the meetings and I Of of 0 work Is with the commission to hopefully make positive and beneficial changes for them and for future generations. Moreover, I Ot" of the Student Service Volunteert"'A.z part Programmy school. This program is designed for students to use their skills and put them towards helping others and benefiting their school community. Although the program officially starts in si h grade, I have actually acted as a teacher's aide and helped out since I was in fourth grade. In addition. I have been an active member in the Youth Action Council. Being involved in volunteering has taught me how to interact with others and to value commitment. Through community service, I have been able to meet many teens my age who share common interests in helping others. Volunteering has not only taught me about working with others and meeting new people but also how to take the stepfrom imitative to action. Community service involves setting aside personal time to make time for projects and following through. Moreover, for the past five years, I have been a part of the Youth Action Council,, which is a group of teens aged twelve to eighteen, whose purpose is to find ways to serve the community. Two of the most memorable and profound experiences of the group include the school spruce-up project at the Jefferson Child Development Center in Oakland and taking Shelter Incl children to Build-A-Bear. The school spruce-up project was truly a unique experience in which I worked with hundreds of other teens to clean up Jefferson Child Development Center and create a healthy learning environment fit for young minds. When I first walked into the school, I was amazed to see a learning center in such disrepair. Though it was difficult, I wondered who those kids where who attended the school and why they were so uncared for. Although I knew that I was helping them, they remained faceless to me. The second project included taking Shelter Inc. children to Build-A-Bear. As I worked with the children I was finally able to put a face to the faceless people I had wondered about before and to interact with them. When I first met them, I saw sad faces but in their eyes I saw candles burning with hope, and faces that needed to be loved and cared for with great warmth. I learned to give from being with them and was surprised by the appreciation in them for even the smallest thing I did. More importantly, volunteering has shaped my life on .several different levels. It has helped me appreciate all that I have. I realized that there are people out there that are less fortunate than me who really understand appreciation more than anyone I know. Often we forget to appreciate and be grateful, taking the small things in life for granted. Although the Youth Action Council may not have changed the world, it gives a feeling of assurance that someone out there cares and that people in need are not faceless. More importantly, it has shown me that when there is someone in need,, compassion is what brings people together. Gender, age, color, and race are completely disregarded. No one is A& questioned or judged whether they are good or bad people. They are rescued in a time of need at that moment, which is true compassion. My volunteer experience makes me feel as if what I am doing is important and that I have made someone else's life a little bit better. However, the best reward is the smile that glows on their faces after I have done something for them, a smile that lights me up. With my serious dedication, experience, motivation/drive to help others and make a difference, passion, and love towards what I dol I am sure that these qualities Will be beneficial as a commissioner. 5. 1 think that I am a very'down-to-earth person who is caring, easy going, and sympathetic. I am kind'. friendly and understanding of others. Moreover., I like to help others with whatever I can and whenever needed. I think being able to do something for others is very rewarding and gives me a sense of accomplishment. Some of the qualities and talents that I would bring to CYC as a commissioner are my determination in achieving my goals,, my solid and thorough organizational skills, motivation in what I want to accomplish, and dedication in everything I do. I am very reliable and can be counted on. I always follow through and am 0.0 responsible. Moreover, I am extremely committed, passionate about what 1 do, and I strongly believe in what I fight/strive for. Furthermore, I think that my experience will help me to bring new issues to the commission that I witness through my volunteering. With my strong,, determination and will I am sure that I will do my best to make a difference in my community. a aAo th voluntuer T: 925.472.5760 1 F: 925.472.5780 c. I have known Ashley for three years, as her science teacher. She is a good solid student who always strives to do her very best. She is impeccably neat in all her work, and is one of the hardest workers with whom I have had the pleasure to work. This year she has served as my Teacher assistant and has done an exemplary job. She will accomplish any task I ask of her, with diligence and care. For her service in my classroom she was awarded the Student Service award for the third quarter.of this school year, amongst stiff competition. I highly recommend that Ashley join your organization as a volunteer, as she is a caring hard working student striving to make her mark in the world. C ve L%_ai Jennifer Tao 1. Why do you want to be a member of the CYC? I think that it is vital to support organizations like CYC to benefit society. I want to give back and become involved in community service and advocacy. I feel that it's necessary to nurture and care for the community and to be active in society, so that one can gain a wider world view and truly make a difference. 2. List the 3 more important issues for youth in your area and f how ou ound out about them. y a) Not enough involvement in the community: Speaking with friends I discovered p g wm y that many of them simply weren't actively participating in society, making excuses like "I'm too busy" or "I won't be helpful". Some don't even care about the issues that society faces and it seems that there's a widespread sense of carelessness regarding the community. b) Lack of artistic contact/cultures: while students do attend concerts and absorb the culture, there seems to be a definite enclosure regarding a general knowledge of the arts. Many youths are only receptive to the popular culture and lack cultivation in different kinds of arts like classical music, modern/Asian art etc. A deeper understanding of various arts helps develop a wider sense of acceptance and more cultural appreciation. It's easy to get caught up in competitive academics and school and forget to refine our artistic senses. c) Not many outlets of student creativity: There are few youth publications that address problems youths are facing like drinking, pregnancy, drugs, etc. Many students would love to be involved in a publication to express their thoughts and ideas, and I know many others would love to read it. However, there are few youth magazines to begin with, let alone ones that have open forums for publication. 3.How could you, as a CYC Commissioner, help to address these issues? As a CYC Commissioner, I would definitely try to promote awareness in these 3 aspects. To encourage students to engage in community service and volunteer projects, I'd collaborate with school leaderships and hold an "Involvement Fair", where there'd be tables set up with information regarding different types of volunteer opportunities. This would be held at lunchtime with various non-profit organizations sending reps or just brochures/contact information. As a follow-up,perhaps a school-wide competition could be held to tally p u volunteer hours of classes in 3 or 4 weeks. The winning class could receive some sort of prize, either a special privilege or ice cream, etc. This event gives students a chance to experience community involvement that will hopefully lead to long-term commitments with beneficial organizations. .To expose students to more art and different cultures, volunteerism in cultural centers like "Asian Art Museum" would be promoted through flyers Colleg a&Career centers etc. We could arrange discounts for teens at classical concerts and museums, etc. There could also be a week at schools where performances (music, dance) pertaining to different cultures are arranged, art is displayed, and food is brought in b classes. y The Bridge could be more publicized with more copies made to be distributed over a larger area, but perhaps it can devote some pages where students can send in articles concerns and s works of art to get published. This would be a good way to find out what problems face youths on a continual basis. There could be more widespread distribution (would the county sponsor more publication?)of The Bridge and we could also support other teen magazines like"Youth Outlook" to circulate around and encourage youths to utilize this healthy outlet of opinion and relate. That wa more students would submit works to more open youth magazines, events sponsored by the y, CYC could be publicized in the magazines, and a youth community would be slowly building. 4. What are your current community and school activities? I'm an intern for Parents for Safer Environment, which works to reduce the use of harmful pesticides and fertilizers in areas where children play. I've charted graphs and made databases of endorsers, pesticide invoices, and county applications. I also volunteer with Be the Star You Are!, which promotes a more positive youth outlook. With BTSYA, I attend committee meetings to brainstorm ideas for fundraisings for the charity. Right now I'm on the events committee to plan a possible local movie night and a partnership with OSH on its opening day. Additionally, I'm a volunteer for CompanionCare, a company that provides senior care. I'm in the process of making a Youth Council for Extra Hands for ALS, which sends volunteers to help with the needs of families in difficult situations with an ALS patient. I will also be a"field" volunteer to visit the patient's homes once I turn 16,or possibly earlier depending on the situation.I'm part of the YAC in Walnut Creek, which links youth volunteers for various non-profit organizational projects. I participate ate in Chinese school and in the school orchestra. Over the summer I will be volunteering with the Asian Art Museum and continuing my work with the current organizations. 5. What special skills and talents wouldyou bring to the work of the Commission? P .Y g From my work with PfSE, I can bring in resourcefulness and administrative capabilities through my research at the Town office and the analytical graphs/databases that I've assembled. I'm very familiar with Word, research, Excel, and Powerpoint. My experience with BTSYA has equipped me with creative fundraising ideas and event organizational skills. CompanionCare has made me quite efficient with various clerical duties. I speak Mandarin Chinese proficiently, and I'm a pretty good artist, especially in Chinese painting. Most of all, however,I will bring enthusiasm, creativity, and commitment. 1 apologize for the late application-1 went to the Moraga Library on Saturday 5/28, one day past the postmark date, and saw the information there. It seems like such an interesting and wonderful opportunity that I coul do't pass on. I RE: Recommendation letter for Jennifer Tao To whom it may concern: It is my pleasure to recommend Jennifer Tao to you. Although she has volunteered with our charity, Be the Star You Are! , for only a short time, she has proven herself responsible and enthusiastic. She has followed through with her assignments and been incredibly responsive to our committee needs. For example, when helping to plan a possible fundraiser in partnership with the yet to open OSH in Moraga, she took the initiative to find contact information of the new manager. Jennifer emailed OSH online, called OSH operational departments, and even called the Town Office to find his phone number and location. Be the Star You Are! is a 501 C3 all volunteer organization the works to empower women, families, and youth at risk through literacy and positive media. Jennifer is helping us organize events for our local youth and assisting us with fundraising ideas. She has also volunteered to be a reader for our Teen Star Book Review Team. You will find Jennifer to be a wonderful teen addition to your organization. If you have any questions, you may email me: E - -cT or call 925 37.-6-7126 Jennifer is an excellent role model for other youth and we look forward to having her with us for a long time.
