SUBJECT: BOARD CHAMBERS SECURITY C97
SPECIFIC REQUEST(S)OR RECOMMENDATION(S)&BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION
RECOMMENDED ACTION:
REFER to the Internal Operations Committee the issue of security during Board meetings and the
security of the Board Chambers structure while Board meetings are in progress. DIRECT the Internal
Operations Committee to report back to the Board of Supervisors on recommendations to improve the
physical safety of the Board Chambers.
BACKGROUND:
It has been brought to the attention of the District III Supervisor's office on multiple occasions that the
security of the Board Chambers could be greatly improved given that there are currently no reasonable
measures apparent that protect the physical integrity of the Chambers. Given that the Board of
Supervisors routinely deals with controversial issues and encounters distr ght individuals during
Board meetings, it would appear that the Internal Operations Committee ould immediately review
the security of the Board Chambers and make recommendations on imr F ving I . F xample, the

District III Supervisors office has been given examples on numerous times of having similar measures
that court security uses installed at the Board Chambers, such as x-ray machines, etc. The issue of
videotaping those individuals entering and exiting the Board Chambers has also been suggested to our
office. It would appear that in an era post-September 11 where security of governmental structures has
become paramount, it would be wise to review the security measures in place at the Board Chambers
and upgrade them.
CONSEQUENCES OF NEGATIVE ACTION:
We would continue to have a vulnerable Board Chambers that lacks adequate security and puts the
public and governmental officials at continued risk.
