CLERK OF TIME BOARD(MADDY BOOK) By; s f -(.I l# Deputy Human Relations Commission September 21, 2004 Internal Operations Committee Page 2 On August 16, the IOC approved the nomination of Tony Martarella to fill vacant Seat#9 to complete an unexpired term ending November 4, 2005. Mr. Martarella's nomination was proffered to the Board of Supervisors on September 14. Shortly before the September 14 Board of Supervisors meeting, staff received letters from unnamed members of the Human Relations Commission stating that Mr. Martarella's nomination had not been reviewed and confirmed by the Human Relations Commission. The Interim HRC Chair could not be reached prior to the Board of Supervisors meeting to verify this information. As a result, the Board of Supervisors decided to suspend action on the nomination and refer the matter back to the IOC for further review. Subsequent to the Board of Supervisors meeting, the Interim HRC Chair called to confirm that the HRC indeed confirmed Mr. Martarella's nomination last April, but delayed forwarding his nomination for appointment because the nominee was on vacation and could not be reached at that time. The Internal Operations Committee reconsidered Mr. Martarella's nomination at its September 21 meeting and, based on the Interim HRC Chair's statement, which was confirmed by the HRC staff at the time, the IOC confirmed its approval of Mr. Martarella's nomination. Supervisor DeSauinier was absent from the meeting but expressed his support for the recommendation.
