IN CELEBRATION OF MARK GAGLIARDI, RESOLUTION NO. 2004/473
NAMED LABOR ACTIVIST OF THE YEAR
WHEREAS,on September 17,2004 Mark Gagliardi,Chief Steward of the Western U.S. for OPEIU Local 277,
will be honored as Labor Activist of the Year by the Contra Costa County Central Labor Council and the
Contra Costa Building and Construction Trades Council,and it is appropriate at this time to highlight his
many achievements and to extend to him the special recognition of the public; and
WHEREAS, Mark was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on January 31, 1965, graduated from Punxsutawney,
PA Area High School in 1983; and he served in the U.S. Navy from 1984-1989, training as a Hospital
Corpsman,then later becoming an Operating Room Technician,worked at the Oak Knoll Naval Hospital
in Oakland,California for five years;and
WHEREAS, A talented singer/songw��:ite.r,<Ma played:ah&toqr,,ed with his band Outrider from 1989 to 1999;
and
WHEREAS, Mark went to work for American Income Life and OPEIU Local 277 in September 1999; in July
of 2002,he became"apublic relations representative/organizer;and
WHEREAS,Mark'is a delegate to eight Northern California Central Labor Councils,and in September of 2003,
Mark was'elected to the Executive Board of the Contra Costa Central Labor Council; and
WHEREAS,:In October of 2003,Mark was appointed Chief'Stewardqpf the Western U.S. for OPEIU Local 277;
and
WHEREAS,Mark Was appointed to the Board of Directors of the Sportsmeti�.Itth-abor Ooalition in April, 2004

WHEREAS,Mark established the Annual OPEIU Local 277/AIL"S,hoot fora Cure"Charity Sporting Clays
Shoot to benefit tlie.l.fFCW.Leukeinia/Lymphoina Fund,:which to ddiihas raised funds in excess of
$26,000 and is attended`°annually by lQcai labor unions ftbm throughout California;

and civic leadership, that the Board of Supervisors of Contra Costa County would like to congratulate
hien on his receipt of the Labor Activist of the Year by the Contra Costa County Central Labor Council
and the Contra Costa Building and Construction Trades Council, and conveys best wishes for continued
success in his future endeavors.

CHERUB CHID CARE UPON THEIR

WHEREAS, Cherub Child Care was created in 2984 through a partnership between the Kaiser
Permanenteand Veterans Administration Medical Centers in Martinez; and
WHEREAS, Cherub Child Care provides quality care for children ranging from six weeks to five years
of age by CPR-certified and licensed teachers and aides; and
WHEREAS, Cherub Child Care continues to serve the children of VA employees from within and
outside of Contra Costa County; and
WHEREAS, continuous improvements over the years have been made to both the internal and
external environmentsof the facility,including a new playground structure, shade covering and new
windows; and
WHEREAS, teachers and aides participate in continuous professional development to better meet
the needs of all children.
WHEREAS, the Board of Directors and staff members remain committed to providing a nurturing,
learning environment where children can also learn from and teach one another.
