Professor Nancy Zink Victoria English VICTORIA ENGLISH: A BRIEF B ISTORY When I was at the age of four,my parents divorced and my upper class father escaped to his own world and career leaving my mother to care for me in every sense of the ward. I remember my mother helplessly crying over how to manage her financial affairs, and how she was going to avoid jail for non-compliance oftaxes. Her ninth grade education, the death of her father at age 13,and her lower social class did not prepare her for the demands of personal management and the business world.I decided,at an earlier age, that I would become a famous celebrity so that I could buy my mother a house in Bel-Air and so that my father would realize that I am someone important;therefore in 1992,I became a feature player on the TV show Raven in addition to Ding an international swimsuit and fitness model.I retired in 1996 after deciding that I wanted more out of life.I realized that the entertainment industry could never satisfy my needs or longing to manage my personal or professional portfolio or make my father realize that I deserved his attention. Accepting my fears I started a new, satisfying life that would not be chastised because of my age or lack of financial expertise. I enrolled in University of Hawaii's Kapiolani Community College as a part-time student. After my first year,I decided I wanted to go to the University of California at Berkeley after doing a term paper on the Berkeley Student Revolt of 1964. Because I have seen my mother struggle along due to her circumstances and lack of emphasis on education and college, it has alloyed me to keep persevering for academic knowledge. I do not vivant to perpetuate this pattern myself or with my eleven month old daughter Natalia. Education and health are the most important aspects of my life. Education is a vital part of my value system. I love learning and being stimulated. My name is Victoria English and I am a business and political science major. My academic goals are to transfer to University of California Berkeley to obtain a BS and a MBA,and them a JD at Law School. My career goals as an attorney are to protect and advocate the social and financial rights of ethnic, racial and gender minorities. Additionally, service to the clubs, the campus and the community is part of my education. I have completed my fifth semester here at Diablo'Valley College this spring. I am currently the Founder and President of the PVC Professional'Women's Club. As the Associated Students of DVC President 2002-200') I developed the dynamics of leadership as I democratically governed the forty four-member board.I implemented the functions of management such as supervision, goal setting,decision-masking,motivation, effective communication, delegation, time rnanagemernt, performance evaluations and Chaired weekly meetings. As I focused on the economic perspective through allocative and productive efficiency,my theoretical observations have been that in the past, that the nature and method of the student's lacy of organization in student government, and the bureaucracy of the Administration have been major determinants for growth, stability, and economic freedom. In order to efficiantly increase social utility and economic profits for maximizing better campus standard of living for all students,we must not only continue to own the factors of production but have optimal power by an ASDVC internal budget actual revenues and expenditures report (which we have not have in a least 3 years from the Administration),constitutional amendments (adding a Minority Affairs Officers,Webmaster,Budget Oversight Committee,Technology Committee,ASDVC Annual Report which include legal, social, and economic summaries), Statewide General Fund Crisis Committee, student based surveys so that rationalism is accomplished. We were successful in all these goals. As the 2002-21143 Contra Costa District Student Trustee,I organized monthly conferences with the District's Associated Students'Presidents,Advisors, and the Chancellor to address the issues of the District's Community Colleges and Statewide policies and procedures. Also,I attended monthly Contra Costa Community College Governing Board meetings, monthly Vittoria English2 meetings with the Chancellor, attended legislative ccxtferences and lobbied in Sacramento and Washington DC. As the 2001-2002 President of Alpha Gamma Sigma Gamma Psi,the California Community Honors` Society in which I actively strived to fulfill the hallmarks of leadership, scholarship, fellowship and service. As AGS President I have been instrumental in increasing the number of volunteer hours ever in the history of the City of Concord and the fifteen years of AGS existence between DVC and the Mt.Diablo Unified School District After school program. I have organized alliances and joint ventures with minority clubs on campus to build bridges to the community through cultural presentations, tutoring opportunities, and mentoring programs, At the Meadow Homes After School Program I have tutored and mentored bilingual children through the DVC Volunteer Program and help raise fiords for gifts to the children. l have organized regional and state conferences to unite the varying concerns of students as well as speak to the Contra Costa Governing Board and student trine advocating the students'voices pertaining to standards and principles of DVC. As the 2001-2002 Associated Students Diablo Valley College Califcirnia Student Association of Community Colleges Representative I have helped fight to restore the$98 million that was cut from the Governor's budget for°Community College maintenance and equipment funds. I have organized a rally at our State Capital in Sacramento calling for our Governor to sign the reduced bill SB735 and marketed campus wide an online petition to Governor Grey Davis requesting that he not veto this Bill because community college students care about the quality of their education and that we deserve the 46.9 million funding which we did successfully receive. In addition I was vice-chair of region three conference committee, which consist often colleges, and I have served the ASDVC board for four semesters. As 2001-2002 founder and Chair of the Associated Students Diablo Valley College Diversity Awareness I have identified a strategic plan for developing diversity priorities in student activities, implemented processes of increasing campus wide consciousness concerning the importance of diversity issues for student success and encouraged legislation and public support of students in the community college by organizing surveys, lectures, speaker programs (total of ten), student pastels, cultural presentations with music, food, dance, and designing t- shirts, posters, and flyers and hand bills that have correlated the varying concerns of students. As the Diversity Task Force Representative I have requested to the administration for club hyperlink to,the DVC main website, campus wide mail out,and schedule of course catalogue to include club contact information. As a 2002 Intern fear Congressman George Miller and Chair of the ASDVC Measure A Committee I successful informed and organized stuJents and constituents to vote for the$120 million facility improvement bond for the Contra Costa District.I organized a campus wide state ofthe union address by Congressman Miller,Assemblywoman Lysin Leach, Chancellor Chuck Spence, faculty Professor i Civil Rights advocate Andy Barlow, student advocates where educational,'exrvirorrmmsental and student.advocacy was addressed. I continue to actively strive to promote leadership, service, fellowship, diversity, students' rights and educational funding and most importantly the students'voices. Education is a key to freedom and the future.I have the ability to handle responsibility with tittle supervision and to work within the precise specifications of tasks as well as the ability to use good judgment and to make soured decisions.I enjoy creating order and structure and interacting with people and being straightforward and honest.I am a conscientious, flexible, realistic,open-minded,,and a passionate student. I value communication and efficiency. Above all else I have an obligation to care, listen, enhance and promote equality. I below that my education, efIbit and success in changing inequalities and abuses will contribute to society's inertia for a better world. r eges t: Governing BoardChancellor } t ` Charles C.Sponte David N.Mac Diarmid,President David W.Girard,Wce President ,.; #Q•}' College Presidents Jess N Reyes,5ecrerran, Yi# a Jx utc t 51 Contra Costa College Nolen Carr Sheila A.Gritli Diablo Valley College Mark G.Edelstein John T Nejedly Los Medanos College Peter Garcia June 6, 2003 Board of Supervisors Contra Costa County 661 Pirie Street Martinez, CA 94663 Attention: Clerk of the Sward Dear Board of Supervisors: I am pleased to recommend Victoria English for your consideration for membership on the Commission for Women. Ms English was a Congressional Intern in my Concord District{office from January through June of the year 2002. Ms English impresses me as a truly exceptional and gifted individual. As a Congressional Intern she was reliable, well prepared and always willing to go the extra mile. Extremely self motivated and deeply committed to her responsibilities, leis. English worked well under pressure and .handled stress with a maturity seldom seen in our intem program. As we watched her move easily and steadily among people, tasks and challenges it became obvious that she would take her place as one of the most impressive and valued interns that we have had the pleasure of working with throughout our twenty-seven years in the House of Representatives. In addition to the substantial communication and overall interpersonal skills that she demonstrated on a daily basis when dealing with and responding to constituent phone calls, letters and personal inquiries,Ms. English consistently displayed a thorough understanding of relevant current issues and their delicate relationship to the legislative process. In a few short months she was able to master her assignments so well that she is currently assisting in the training of our next set of interns and will continue to serve as our example of what we hope all of; our interns will become. In conclusion, I commend Ms. English to you without reservation. She is a highly intelligent and articulate individual with a sharp focus on who she is, where she is going and what she needs to get there. ate.. A hardworking and focused student with an excellent GPA, the applicant is most deserving of your consideration. Immersed in campus and community activities, she is one of the most outstanding students to come through DVC. Victoria took my History 141 (Western Civilization after 1660) in the fall semester, 2000. Competing primarily against serious students aspiring to transfer into the UC system, she did consistent A work. Of the 180 students who completed my classes that semester, she ranked 18 (in'paint totals), which means she was among the top 10% of my students. As her transcripts indicate, she has impeccable academic credentials. Her strengths include intelligence and excellent writing and verbal skills. A reentry student majoring in both business and political science, she is single-minded about achieving her immediate ,academic goal, entry into the Haas School of Business in Berkeley. Not surprisingly, her greatest strengths are her strong motivation and discipline, as evidenced by a perfect attendance record. She has no academic deficiencies. Her potential is unlimited; she should have no difficulty gaining acceptance to UC Berkeley. I was appointed co-chair of a campus-wide committee to evaluate the faculty and staff`at DVC during',the academic year 2000-2001 as part of the accreditation process and was asked to find three students to represent the student body. I was so impressed by Victoria's maturity and enthusiasm that I immediately thought of her. She has performed her committee duties very conscientiously despite a heavy academic and extracurricular schedule. In fact, Victoria has participated in a variety of volunteer projects (see her application), including working as a tutor in Meadow Lane School in Concord and working on a variety of diversity projects on campus (she is founder and chair of the student Diversity Awareness task force) . During the 2001.-2002 academic year she served as President of Alpha Gamma Sigma, the community college honor society. I've known and worked closely with all the AGS presidents, and she has been the best one. At present, and despite the fact she became a. new mother this year, she is an intern for Congressman George Miller, Contra Costa Community College district student trustee, and DVC student body president, and she is off to a great start. Victoria gets along fine with people of diverse backgrounds (she transferred to DVC from Hawaii) and is well respected by her peers. Clearly, she is perceived as a leader and will represent the school well as she moves on to the university. Her ultimate goal is to be a public interest lawyer.. Sincerely, %4 Manuel G. Gonzales, PhD The Colleges of Contra Costa DIABLO VALLEY COLLEGE 321 Gulf C70>Road Pleasant Hill,California 94523-1.544 1 I VL M5)685-1230 February 25,2002 Dear Members of the Selection Committee: I became acquainted with Victoria English about two years ago when she became my student. The first class she took from me was English 1.23,the second semester Freshman. Reading and Composition class; then, the following semester, she came back to me to take my English 126,Critical Thinking, The Shaping of Meaning in Language. Through in-class exchanges, office conferences and her writing, I got to know Victoria well. She clearly singled herself out as an individual who was in school to learn and to grow. As a student, Victoria has the dualities instructors desire: intelligence,self-motivation, Intuitiveness, flexibility and an open mindedness that always makes her willing to explore new ideas or possibilities. Even though she possessed good skills when she carne into my class the first time, she did not sit back and coast. Instead she continually challenged herself, trying to expand her skills not only in writing but in the critical thinking required for literary interpretation. When she took the second class, she continued to expand her skills, always focused on stretching them as far as she could. She knew consistent, aggressive effort would o6i her the best chances for success and seeing that, did whatever she needed to do in order to reach tate intended, appropriate goals. If she ever felt unsure, she would take the initiative to clarify whatever was necessary to secure her objectives. Victoria always carne to class prepared and ready to contribute to as well as benefit from each session. Victoria is the kind of person that makes a class richer. She questions the status quo; she challenges herself to excel; she challenges others to be better;and she encourages those who would just sit back to step forward. Working with her in my classes and outside of class has provided me with a reminder about why I went into teaching and why I stay in the profession. Victoria is a promising scholar, one who is always reaching foi the next level of knowledge; her goals are realistic and the challenges she sets for herself are attainable because she has the talent and skill to achieve them. I feel she is the kind of individual we want to encourage, who has been and will continue to be an asset in whatever program or career she is in. I recommend her without reservations for your scholarship. Sincerely, ancy D.
