The following correspondence has been received since July 15, 2002: • Letter from Henry Saar on Public Health on Public Health Services and Food Poisoning To Internal Operations Committee Received on August 16 2002 by Supervisor Uilkema Re: Personal experience leads to two suggestions on how Health and Environmental Services should operate when food poisoning is reported. Summary: Over Independence Day, I got violently sick from eating a chain store bought cantaloupe. Ate nothing else on that hot afternoon. Then found another person who also had "self limiting" illness from purchasing at same store cantaloupe a day before (they never reported to Public health.) I reported this to Health Dept., was transferred here but got a courteous, knowledgeable inspector who covers Orinda. Action Required: There was no way of action/reporting. Since he does not work Fridays and on the holidays, this goes to 4 - 5 days. Too long for such , I think. The inspector said he only knew his (small area) reports, but will "ask other inspectors". That should change to a formal way to quickly ask other 6 inspectors and Alameda and Solano and maybe SF County. Currently Contra Costa County does not even have such connection. Why is that? Contra Costa Times article wrote that only 2 cases had been reported on that was on a 500,000 lbs. Con Agra hamburger recall. These two cases went to same ? physician and same inspector on county and from there on divvolWo the lead. When these two department heads in CCC come for budget or internal operations committee sessions, ask them, please, on action points. This is something we can improve on, don't you think?
