HomeMy WebLinkAboutMINUTES - 09102002 - C60 r In the Matter of Endorsing Senate Bill 2535 ) California Wild Heritage Wilderness Act of 2000 RESOLUTION NO.2002/505 WHEREAS,the California Wild Heritage Wilderness Act of 2002 is a moderate approach to set aside new wilderness areas within California; WHEREAS,the bill was crafted after thousands of hours of consultation with interested parties, WHEREAS,the bill would designate 75 areas as wilderness for a total of 2.4 million acres; WHEREAS,the bill would protect areas representing a wide diversity of ecosystems,in 36 counties ranging from the Oregon'border to the Mexican border; WHEREAS,endangered and threatened species whose habitats will be protected by this bill include: the bald eagle;Sierra Nevada Red Fox;and Spring Run Chinook salmon,among others; WHEREAS,currently only 13 per cent of California is currently protected as wilderness and this bill would raise that amount to 15 percent, WHEREAS,wilderness designation means these areas remain o�ren to a myriad of(recreational uses, including: horseback riding; fishing; hiking; backpacking; rock climbing; cross country skiing; and canoeing; WHEREAS,numerous,economic studies suggest that designated wilderness areas are a big draw that attracts outdoor recreation enthusiasts and tourism dollars; WHEREAS,although Contra Costa County has no areas that will be designated wilderness areas, designation of wilderness areas is economically and environmentally beneficial to the entire state; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Centra Co$ta .County Board of Supervisors recognizes its responsibility to protect our natural heritage and supports proposed United States Senate Bill 2535,the California Wild Heritage Wilderness Act of 2002.
