In the Matter of RESOLUTION NO. 2002/420
DECLA.R1NG AUGUST 18-24 COAIWNTFY HEALTH CENTER WEEK
XIV CONTRA COSTA COUNTY
WHEREAS,there is a significant number of residents of the County of Contra Costa who are currently medically under-
served for a number of reasons, the most prominent of which include.financial and cultural barriers;and
WHEREAS,the Community Health Centers which comprise the Community Clinic Consortium.of Contra Costa(Brookside
Community Health Center, La Clinica de La Raza, and Planned Parenthood: Shasta Diablo) are private, nonprofit
corporations governed by volunteer boards comprised of community members;and
WHEREAS,the committed staff of the Community Health Centers provide high duality primary health care to
medically underserved people in the County of Contra Costa;and
WHEREAS,it is critical that Community Health Centers remain viable providers of primary health care throughout Contra
Costa County by providing; a host of services, including general medical care, dental care, women's health care,
immunizations, testing and treatment for sexually transmitted infections, health education and illness prevention,
counseling,family planning,and enrollment in public health programs,and
WHEREAS,Community Health Centers in Contra Costa have made great strides in empowering communities to
develop programs to meet their specific needs,strengthening communities to enhance opportunities for children and
families,and providing health care services in accessible low-cost environments;and
WHEREAS,Community Health Centers have also made a significant difference in the Contra Costa health care system
by improving access to quality health care provided by trained professionals in areas that had previously been neglected
or underserved,promoting individual responsibility and health awareness in the communities,and offering primary
preventive health care of the highest quality to reduce preventable deaths,costly disabilities,and communicable
diseases;and
WHEREAS,Community Health Centers strive to promote 100% access and zero health disparities to help achieve
primary health care for everyone and end health disparities;
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of the County of Contra Costa,does hereby proclaim the
week of August 18-24,2002 as"Community Health Center Week"in Contra Costa County,and urges its citizens to
recognize the important contributions of Contra Costa's Community Health Centers to the improvement of the general
quality of life of the citizens of Contra Costa County.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the County of Contra Costa does hereby recognize the important contribution of
Community Health Centers to the improvement of the general quality of life of residents of Contra Costa County.
PASSED by unanimous vote of the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors on this
13th day of August,2002

HONORING UNICEF in celebration of"T'rick-or-Treat for UNICEF"Day on October 31, 2002
Whereas,"Trick or Treat.for UNICEF"began in Philadelphia in 1950 when a youth group collected seventeen
dollars in decorated milk cartons on Halloween to help childrenverseas .and
Whereas,Since that time;the children of the United States have collected more than$11.5.million by going door-
to-door for the U.S.'Fund with UNICEF's trademark orange collection boxes on Halloween;and
Whereas,Today,"Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF"provides the opportunity for school children and young adults to
learn about their peers in the developing world,while also raising funds to help improve their lives;and
Whereas,Fund-raising efforts like"Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF"have helped 80 percent of the world's children
become immunized against the top sic deadliest diseases,saving three million lives each year,and malting way
for the two-thirds of the world's children that now have completed primary school and
Whereas, In 2001, $4 million was collected in the nearly five million"Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF"" collection
boxes that were distributed across the United States,in every state;and
Whereas, The "Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF" program provides children of the United States the chance to
perform a selfless deed and gain a valuable educational experience,giving them a better sense of the world in
which they live and of the lives of other children around the world;and
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOL'V'ED, that the hoard of Supervisors of Contra Costa County does hereby
proclaim October 31, 2002 to be"Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF" Day and urge all the citizens of Contra Costa
County to acknowledge this event and participate fittingly in its observance.
