Bautista, County Probation Officer Costa DATE: August 15, 2001 COST'`-COOh� C' County SUBJECT: First Annual Report on the Schiff-Cardenas Crime Prevention Act 2000 Probation Department Programs Q SPECIFIC REQUEST(S)OR RECOMMENDATION(S)&BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION RECOMMENDATION: Accept the first annual report on the County Probation Department programs funded through the Schiff-Cardenas Crime Prevention Act of 2000. BACKGROUND: The statutes governing the Schiff-Cardenas Act of 2000 funds requires in Section 30061(4)(E)(i) of the Government Code that each county shall report beginning August 15, 2001, and annually thereafter until 2003 to the County Board of Supervisors and the Board of Corrections on outcome measures and expenditures for programs approved in the comprehensive multiagency juvenile justice plans. The penalty for failure to report the required data is forfeiture of subsequent allocations from the fund. Given the successful results for high school-age youth,the county proposed to replicate this program in selected middle schools. Probation Officers will provide supervision and specified services to juvenile offenders and other at-risk youth experiencing problems ranging from truancy to major criminal offenses.The program seeks to reduce delinquent offenses; provide for higher rates of successful completion of probation and restitution requirements; improve participating students'school attendance and performance.
