Que$tion 4 Please give details of your area(s) of expertise. Answer Government I am familiar with county government systems and have been employed as a Child Welfare Worker for the Department of Children and Family Services by three counties in California including Alameda, Santa Clara and Los Angeles over the past six years. My core responsibilities are to investigate referrals of child abuse and/or neglect and make recommendations to the juvenile court for children's protection. I routinely advocate for government services including Social Security assistance, CalWorks, MediCal, Housing Authority services, mental health services and the juvenile justice system in an effort to assist families who are involved with protective services. The primary goal of my job.is to ensure the safety of children and preserve the family unit by offering help to disadvantaged women. Fundraising While employed as a graduate intern with El Nido Family Centers, a nonprofit organization in Los Angeles County that provides services to pregnant and parenting teens and their families, I organized several fundraising events over the course of two years. The special events included planning and implementing two silent auctions that included a High Tea and art gala at an artist colony and a day at the theatre with the Riverdance Production. Both events were successful in raising funds for programs to help pregnant and parenting teens and their families. Human Services Involvement in human services has always been a major theme in my life. Six years ago, I volunteered for Contra Costa County Department of Children and Family Services as an assistant to Child Welfare Workers. In that capacity, I supervised and coordinated visits for children and their families, transported children to various appointments and testified as an advocate for children's rights in the juvenile court. I have dedicated my career to social welfare in an effort to improve the quality of life for those I am fortunate enough to serve and to advocate on behalf of those who do not have a voice of their own, often disenfranchised women and children. Question 5 Do you serve on any Board of Directors/Trustees? If so, which ones? Answer At the present time I do not serve on any Board of Directors/Trustees. While employed at El Nido Family Centers I was a member of the Board of Directors where I gained experience as an active participant on committees. I collaborated with other board members to create a new strategic plan for the Agency, evaluated programs, made funding decisions based on the needs of the community and organized both fundraising and special events. I was also involved in community outreach that included soliciting the participation of local government officials in such activities as ribbon cutting ceremonies at new sites, health fairs and pregnancy prevention programs. Question 8 Why do you want to serve on the CCCW? Answer My membership in the community of Contra Costa County began 29 years ago, when I was born at Delta Memorial Hospital in Antioch. I was raised in the beautiful expanse of this ever-changing county throughout my adolescence. I moved away for educational purposes for a brief period to San Diego and Los Angeles. Now that I have reached the time in my life to settle down, I unequivocally chose Contra Costa as the place to continue to plant my roots. I feel a sense of responsibility to actively improve our growing East Bay Area in order to create positive changes that meet the needs of the vast number.of cultural, generational, and socioeconomic differences of the women that comprise our community. I believe that addressing the needs of women in our community and influencing positive new directions is just as important as preserving some of the unique qualities of our county that make women and their families feel welcome. As a social worker, I believe it is my civic responsibility to ensure social equity to all community members including disenfranchised women. I have dedicated my professional career to the protection of children which translates into helping parents make positive changes in their own lives by accessing resources that help stabilize families and encourage women to realize their own self-worth. I understand the need to address a spectrum of political issues in order to acquire resources that are necessary to help those who are disadvantaged. In summary, my commitment to the Commission for Women is not only an opportunity to enrich my own life but to improve the lives of others in this community. I believe that racial, religious and cultural tolerance and compassion for those in need are values that every community must consciously embrace in an effort to recognize each members' value and ensure their safety.
