In Contra Costa County's Senior Peer Counseling Program, active older Ween.and women volunteers are trained to assist fellow seniors cope with life's challenges through individual counseling and support groups. '4'4'hat docs the Training Program include? The 24-session Training Program includes didactic material and experiential group learning. After acceptance into the program, all trainees will participate in a course that addresses the following goals: • Enhancement of personal qualities essential to persons working closely Nvith older adults, • Increasi.ng the trainee's skills of active listening and effective conununications with. older persons, • Promoting the trainee's self-development, • I?ducating the trainee about liealth and aging, and • Preparing the trainee to participate in supportive mental health counseling and health education. During the training, counselors have;the opportunity to meet with the staff individually for assistance and evaluation. A certificate is awarded to each trainee at the completion of training. What is the schedule for the Training Program? To ensure the highest level of training, enrollment is limited. Classes will be held two mornings a week, three hours each. Trainees are expected to attend all training sessions. Who is eligible for the Training Program? Applicants are mature adults. There are no specific educational requirements. We are looking for warm,caring people who are non- judgmental.. Applicants are asked to make a conunitment to volunteer for at least one year following the training. Tlr.is includes attending weekly group supervision meetings and occasional continuing education classes, as well as seeing one or more clients weekly. IZow do I. apply?
