In the Matter of Resolution No. 2000/400
RECOGNIZING SEPTEMBER 15- OCTOBER 15,2000
AS "NATIONAL HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH" IN
CONTRA COSTA COUNTY
WHEREAS, America draws strength from the extraordinary diversity of this people,
that our national character is enhanced by citizens who maintain and honor cultural customs
brought from other lands; and
WHEREAS, the Hispanic people have long been part of this tradition, having been
among the earliest settlers in California, in Contra Costa County and other regions of the United
States and Latinos over the years have come to this country in search of democracy, freedom and
a better way of life. Their diverse and vibrant culture includes elements originating in Europe,
North America, Central America, South America and the Caribbean; and
WHEREAS, many Hispanic sons and daughters have served our country with
distinction, making important contributions in the arts and sciences, the business world,
academia, government, agricultural and the Armed Forces helping to preserve the democracy and
freedom all Americans enjoy. Hispanics have served in the United States Armed Forces and
since World War I have been awarded the Medal of Honor more than any other ethnic group; and
WHEREAS, pursuant to Public Law No. 100-402, approved August 17, 1988, "That the
President of the United States is hereby authorized and requested to issue annually a
proclamation designating thirty-one day period beginning September 15 and ending on October
15 as NATIONAL HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH and calling upon the people of the
United States especially the educational community, to observe such month with appropriate
activities"; and
WHEREAS, the community is invited to participate on October 8, 2000, Sunday, 11
AM - 4 PM, at the Seventh Annual National Hispanic Heritage Celebration which will take
place at County East Mall, 2550 Somersville Road, in Antioch, California, sponsored by GIVE
ALWAYS TO OTHERS & COMPANY, a California non-profit organization.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of the County
of Contra Costa, California, does hereby proclaim the days of September 15 through October 15,
2000 as NATIONAL HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH and urge all the people of this County
to honor this observance with programs, activities, and ceremonies to learn about and promote
the Latino-Hispanic contributions.
PASSED by unanimous vote of the Board Members present on this 12th day of
September, 2000.

HONORING DR. DANIEL S. TANITA,D.D.S.
FOR BEING CHOSEN BY THE WEST COUNTY BUSINESS AND
PROFESSIONAL ASSOCIATION AS CITIZEN OF THE YEAR 2000
WHEREAS, Dr. Tanita as a leading healthcare professional for the past 15 years,has
improved immensely the health and well being of the residents of West Contra Costa
County; and
WHEREAS,Dr. Tanita assisted the Brookside Community Health Care Center establish
a much-needed Dental Clinic where low-income residents of West Contra Costa County
can go to receive dental care; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Tanita was instrumental in securing over$100,000 in grants to fund the
Dental Clinic at Brookside Community Health Care Center; and
WHEREAS, Dr.Tanita has a long history of providing voluntary dental service to West
County residents,particularly children; and
WHEREAS, Dr.Tanita in 1989, began collaborating with the Contra Costa County
Office of the State's Children's Health and Disability Prevention Program(CHDP)to
offer free sealant clinics for low-income children; and
WHEREAS,Dr. Tanita's 15 year affiliation with the YMCA of West Contra Costa
County earned him the distinct recognition of 1987-88 Volunteer of the Year and 1998
Humanitarian of the Year; and
WHEREAS,Dr. Tanita's fifteen year membership of the City of Richmond Rotary Club
resulted in the Rotary Club's support for several community projects, including the
Brookside Community Health Care Center and the Martin Luther King Dental Clinic.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of
Contra Costa County does hereby recognize and honor Dr. Daniel S. Tanita for his
strong leadership and his determination to treat every individual with kindness,
compassion and respect. We thank you and honor you on this day.
