BACKGRO ND/REASON(g) FOR R.ECOIWNDAT1C3NS: For a number of years the County has contracted with Medical and Dental Specialists to provide specialized professional services which are not otherwise available in its hospital and clinics. On September 21, 1999, the Board of Supervisors approved Contract #26-967 (as amended by Administrative Amendment Agreement #26-967-1) with Thomas J. McDonald, M.D. , for the period from August 1, 1999 through July 31, 2000, to provide Ophthalmology services for Contra Costa Regional Medical Center and Contra Costa Health Centers. Approval of Contract #26-967-2 will allow Contractor to continue providing services through July 31, 2003 . This Contract includes a six-month automatic extension through December 31, 2001, in the amount of $549, 452 . FISCAL IMPACT: This Contract is 100% funded by Mental Health Realignment funds as a result of savings generated from the County' s reduction of client placements at State Hospitals. BACKGROUND/REASON(S) FOR RECOMMENDATION(S) : On July 20, 1999, the Board of Supervisors approved Novation Contract #24-680-8 (as amended by Contract Amendment Agreement #24-680-9) with Telecare Corporation for the period from July 1, 1999 through June 30, 2000 (with a six-month automatic extension through December 31, 2000) for subacute care for County residents who are severely and persistently mentally ill (SPMI) . This Contract is part of the Department's cost saving plan to reduce the number of high-cost State Hospital beds by developing alternative placements. BACKGROUND/REASON(a) FOR RZ ATjQNS: On January 14, 1997, the Board of Supervisors adopted Resolution #97/17, authorizing the Health Services Department to contract with the State Department of Mental Health to assume responsibility for Medi-Cal mental health specialty services . Responsibility for outpatient mental health specialty services involves contracts with individual, group and organizational providers to deliver these services .
