SUBJECT. POLICY ON MEMORIALIZING FIRE STATIONS
SPECIFIC REQUESTS)OR RECOMMENDATION(S)&BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION
RECOMMENDATION:
APPROVE the policy established on the memorializing of Contra Costa County Fire Protection District fire
stations as recommended by the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District Advisory Fire Commission. (See
attached "Policy".)
REASONS FOR RECOMMENDATION/BACKGROUND:
At the suggestion of former County Supervisor Tom Torlakson, the newly constructed Fire Station #87 at 800
W. Leland Road in Pittsburg was named the "John Fields Memorial Station". John Fields was a former Fire
Engineer with the Fire District. Dedication ceremony was held March 16, 2000.
At the February 15, 2000 meeting of the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District Advisory Fire
Commission, the Commission inquired if there were guidelines in place regarding the naming of stations after
individuals. It was discovered that there was no written policy for doing such.
At the April 3, 2000 meeting of the Advisory Fire Commission, a motion was passed to send a letter to the
Board of Supervisors proposing that the Advisory Fire Commission be authorized to establish procedures for
future memorializing of District fire stations (copy attached).
At the June 12, 2000 meeting of the Advisory Fire Commission, the Chairperson directed the Personnel
Committee of the Commission to meet and establish a policy for the memorializing of District fire stations. The
Personnel Committee held a Special Meeting on July 10, 2000 and drafted such policy. At the regular monthly
meeting of the Commission on July 10, 2000, the Commission requested that a Board Order be sent to the
Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors seeking approval of the newly established policy.

RE: Memorializing Fire Stations
Honorable Board Members:
The Fire District's new Station 87 in Pittsburg opened last month and, as
previously requested by the Board, a dedication ceremony was held to name
the station in honor of our former Senior Firefighter John Fields.
As this was the first time a station has been memorialized, there were no set
guidelines to follow. As discussed at the Advisory Fire Commission meeting on
April 3, 2000, the Commission at this time would like to offer their services and
request that they be authorized to establish such guidelines for future use in
the memorializing of fire stations.
Your comments on this matter would be greatly appreciated.
Sincerely,
Edwin (Gene) Rittburg, Chair
Contra Costa County Advisory Fire Commission
