Sheriff-CoronerDATE: uounty n'b• ` June 21, 1999 SUBJECT; University of Califomia, San Francisco Tissue Bank SPECIFIC REQUEST(S)OR RECOMN19NDATION(S)&BACKGROUND AND JUST£F9CA'r;ON RgQQMjAEN2AjQN, Authorize the Sheriff-Coroner or his designee, on behalf of the County, to execute a five year agreement with,the University of California, San Francisco Tissue Bank(UCSF Tissue Bank). The agreement would designate UCSF Tissue Bark as the tissue procurement organization to be utilized by the Coroner when no ever arrangements have been made by the deceased or by the deceased's next of kin. The agreement would allow the Sheriff-Coroner to assess the tissue bark a facility use fee for use of the Contra Costa County Morgue to harvest transplantable tissue, ANSjC ,l Ti N The Coroner's Office has access to potentW donors of tissue which may be used ir,transplantation. The University of California, San Francisco Tissue Bank is licensed by the State of California to perform. its functlon as a tissue bark, and desires to harvest these tissues and make there available for transplant, Section 27491.44 of the California Government Code authorizes the coroner to ester into agreements with one or more procurement organizations to coordinate organ recovery procedures within the coroner's urrsdiction. This agreement will ;yelp to develop the full donor potential of'Contra Costa 'County by providing broader access to various tissues needed for transplantation. lt will also streamline the donation,, process, making tissue donation and transplant possible for many more people. EjNAN9jAL_jMFA9L This agreement provides for a facility use fee, passable to the Sheriff- Coroner by the University of California, San Francisco Tissue Bank, which is dependent upon the complexity of the harvesting process, and thereby the amount of time repufred to complete the !harvest.
