BACKGROUND
The Ambrose Recreation and Park District Board of Directors has authorized
Patti Lambert, General Manager, to request Park Dedication funds in the amount
of $4, 750 for the purpose of contracting with an architectural firm to study
the feasibility of constructing a new community center to replace the Ambrose
Community Center facility located at 3105 Willow Pass Road, Bay Point.
According to the General Manager, the present facility does not adequately
meet the expressed needs of the community for a safe place for children to
play and the need for more community recreational programs. The proposed site
for the new community center is Willow Pass Road and Clearland, Bay Point.
The current Ambrose Community Center, which also houses the Recreation & Park
District offices, lacks adequate space to implement any new recreational
programs for the community of Bay Point. This is due in large part to the
numerous lease/rental arrangements for Ambrose office ', space between the
District and various governmental agencies and non-profit organizations for
the purpose of providing community based health and social services programs
to Bay Point residents .
The study, to be conducted by Dev-Prank Architects, will research the
feasibility of constructing a basketball gymnasium, a full service weight
room with showers and lockers, a community library, a 400 occupancy banquet
facility for various business seminars and community activities, District and
business offices, and if funding permits, an indoor swimming pool for year-
round aquatic programs. Turf and hard court areas at the current Willow Pass
Road location will remain in use for baseball, football, soccer and limited
basketball.
Current funding sources include compensation received by the District for the
loss of a building at Ambrose Park due to the widening of Highway 4 for the
BART extension program, and Park Dedication. Additional funding sources to be
explored by the feasibility study will include Contra Costa County
Redevelopment, long-term financial institution loans ' and the special
tax/assessment process .
