REASONS FOR RECOMMENDATIONIBACKGROUND: The County self-insures its medical malpractice exposure. The cost of claim settlements and legal fees is paid from this fund, and funding levels are determined by actuarial studies. The CSAC Excess Insurance Authority offers $9,500,000 medical malpractice insurance coverage excess of a $500,000 self-insured retention at an annual premium of approximately $500,000. The actuaries reviewed this proposal and find the $500,000 self-insured retention produces the lowest overall cost. Purchase of medical malpractice insurance through the CSAC Excess insurance Authority will provide the County protection from catastrophic medical malpractice claims. FINANCIAL IMPACT: The annual premium cost will be paid by the Medical Malpractice Trust Fund.
