RECQMMENDATION APPROVE Change Order No. 2 to the Contract dated May 12, 1998, for Playground Equipment Replacement at Countywide Head Start Centers for Community Services Department, and AUTHORIZE the Director of General Services to execute the Change Order,which changes the play area surfacing from wood fiber to a rubberized material at the Brookside and Gehringer Head Start sites, and increases the contract price by$55,084.07. II. FINANCIAL IMPACT There are sufficient funds in the plant acquisition account to cover the Change Order. III. BACKGRQ A. During the design phase of this project, the Community Services Department elected to use a less expensive,wood fiber surfacing material at certain Head Start sites instead of the preferred rubberized surfacing material in order to keep the project cost within the budget. B. On March 24, 1998 the Board approved plans and specifications for the project, and authorized the solicitation of bids. The Consultant's estimate for the initial construction contract cost was $704,000. (WH327Y) C. On April 23, 1998 bids were opened. On May 12, 1998 the Board authorized award of a construction contract to the lowest responsive and responsible bidder, Community Playgrounds,in the amount of$597,054.00. D. The Community Services Department wishes to replace the less expensive,wood fiber surfacing with the preferred rubberized surfacing material. Community Playgrounds has submitted a quotation. of $55,084.07 to change the surfacing at the Brookside and GehringerHead Start Sites. This quotation is based on the unit costs Community Playgrounds used to prepare;their base bid. Because the low bid was lower than the Consultant's estimate,this change can be made while still keeping the project cost below the budget.
