Proposed Addition
for
MT. DIABLO STATE PARK
INTRODUCTION
Mt. Diablo State Park consists of 18,832 acres located in central Contra Costa County 4 miles
east of Walnut Creek and 30 miles east of San Francisco. Access is readily available from
Interstate Highways 680 on the west and 580 on the south.
DESCRIPTION
Mt. Diablo is an isolated peak of the central Coast Range. Because of its prominence, the
mountain has served as a landmark for centuries.' Although relatively low at 3,849 feet above sea
level, it dominates the surrounding foothills. As a result, it offers an unobstructed view of the
Bay Area and Central Valley from its summit. This is among the most spectacular vista in
Califonia.
The property under consideration for addition to this unit of the State Park System is
approximately 60 acres and generally known as the Diablo Ranch property. It is an inholding
located along the North Gate Road southwest of the park's center.
PROJECT OBJECTIVES
The proposed acquisition, in the core of the park, will further preserve this intrinsic natural
heritage and make available its recreational values that are accessible to over 5 million people
within one hour's drive.
RECOMMENDATION
It is recommended that the proposed addition be approved for acquisition by the State for Park
System purposes.
