BonweIT and Dr Bowerman were among 17 winners in the Vnited States and Canada, and were sefectedfor their efforts since founding Save Mount Diablo in 1971,and `GVHrE�,EAS, in 1971, Mr. BonweIZ an erectricaf engineer at DucTont, and a member of the Sierra Club with botanist(Dr. Bowerman, author of rl& Flowering BCants and Ferns of Yount Diablo, California, spearheaded the formation of Save Mount Diablo to acquire land and to educate the pu6Cc; U,YIM4ZEAS, Bonwell provided the leadership necessary to establish the organization-from assembling representative groups, to representing Save Mount Diablo at public hearings and at meetings with officials, to designing the group's first stationary,and -1,MT,EAS, Bowerman is considered the expert on Mount Dia6lo's resources. She has headed up the group's landacquisition efforts throughout its history and helpedesta6lrsh ambitious goals to protect an area many times larger than the State Bark then included By 1995, 24 years after Save Mount Diablo was organized and large because of Bonwed and Bowerman's leadership, the State Park has expanded from 6,800 to 19,000 acres; IPMT EAS, Save Mt. Diablo is a Contra Costa land trust which has been preserving lands on Mount Diablo and educating the public about the mountain's natural values since 1971. Save Mount Diablo has 5500 members and is operated by 15 volunteer board members and three staff members. Save Mount Diablo educates the public, acquires land, monitors land use planning on private lands, restores habitat and reintroduces rare species, bui0s traits and supports recreational opportunities, and works to insure that park maintenance needs are met. 9vO W, OER�EFORE, BE IT W0VAQ, that the Board of Supervisors of Contra Costa County does hereby congratulate Arthur Bonwelr and BW Mary Bowerman on receiving the prestigious ChevronlTmes-Mirror Conservation Award and commends them for their outstanding and dedicated work to preserve our beaut fdMt.
