HomeMy WebLinkAboutMINUTES - 07231996 - U1 Y U.1 A THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS OF CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, CALIFORNIA Adopted this Order on July 23, 1996, by the following vote: AYES: Supervisors Rogers, Bishop, DeSaulnier and Smith NOES: None ABSENT: Supervisor Torlakson ABSTAIN: None SUBJECT: Urgency Item Regarding Welfare Reform Bills HR 3734 and S 1795 The following item was brought to the attention of Board Members after the agenda was posted, and the Board unanimously agreed on the need to take action. Supervisor Rogers then moved to authorize the Chair, Board of Supervisors, to draft and sign a letter addressed to President Clinton urging the president to reject the provisions of HR 3734 and S 1795 which bar benefits to legal immigrants and veto any welfare reform bill which contains these punitive restrictions. Supervisor Bishop seconded the motion. IT IS BY THE BOARD ORDERED that the Chair, Board of Supervisors, is AUTHORIZED to draft and sign correspondence addressed to President Clinton urging the president to reject the provisions of HR 3734 and S 1795-which bar benefits to legal immigrants and to veto any welfare reform bill which contains these punitive restrictions. c c: Supervisor Smith I hereby certify that this Is a true and correct copy of . Due to the fact that there will be no DOS mccting until August 6, 1916 I would Inco to bring this issue up under public comment at tomorrow's Board niecting and will ask for a waiver so that the Board can take immediate action oil this issue, As you know, the bill if passed, will eliminate many of the benefits for legal immigrants.
