Rl+,r Welfare Reform Rills HR 3734 and S 1795
We have just learned via facsimile from Willie Brown's office that the welfare bill is
expected to be on President's Clinton's desk within the next few days. Due to the fact that
there will be no DOS mccting until August 6, 1916 I would Inco to bring this issue up
under public comment at tomorrow's Board niecting and will ask for a waiver so that the
Board can take immediate action oil this issue,
As you know, the bill if passed, will eliminate many of the benefits for legal immigrants.
This bill would ulLhiiuLcly uvbt clic SLuLc cuid LW6 vul County what appoa s to bo mtons
of dollars, Many California public officials have alroady voiced their opposition of this
bill and I feel our Board should do the same by submitting a resolution and/or letter of
protest to President Clinton. The Wier anti/nr resolution wmild follow along the same
lines as the attached letter from Mayor Brown's office.
