HomeMy WebLinkAboutMINUTES - 09261995 - C14 Board of Supervisors Of Contra Costa County, State of California IN RECOGNITION OF MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS ] WEEK, OCTOBER 1 TO B. 1995 IN CONTRA ] COSTA COUNTY AS RECOMMENDED BY ] SUPERVISOR GAYLE BISHOP ] RESOLUTION NO. 425 WHEREAS, severe mental and emotional disabilities are more common than cancer, diabetes and heart disease, and .WHEREAS, the vast majority of persons with mental.disabilities respond to treatment and function successfully in the community, and WHEREAS, people with mental disabilities share with the rest of the population a desire and need for interpersonal acceptance and support, decent housing, and an opportunity to be productive, and WHEREAS, a lack of accurate information, understanding and appreciation of differences— . and the resulting Nimbyism and stigmatization—negatively impacts all of society and, most particularly, the persons with.mental disabilities who are engaged in their legitimate pursuit of good health and normal life, and WHEREAS, discriminating against people for a health condition—a condition for which they are not responsible—is not only unfair and immoral, it is illegal under the American Disabilities Act, and WHEREAS, we believe that the people of Contra Costa County will respond positively to accurate information about persons with mental disabilities. NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Board of Supervisors of Contra Costa County does hereby proclaim that October 1 through B, 1995, shall be mental Health Awareness Week in Contra Costa County, and urge all residents to seek out opportunities to gain a greater awareness and understanding of persons with mental disabilities. PASSED AND ADOPTED by unanimous vote of those Supervisors present on September. 26; 1995.
