RE: Affirmative Action
Currently we hear alot of discussions regarding Affirmative Action and the program here in
Contra Costa County. AFSCME Locals 2700 and 512 represent approximately 1,800 county
employees, many of whom are in protected groups. We believe the Affirmative Action Program
in Contra Costa County needs improvement in the way it operates.
The County should establish an Affirmative Action Board, that would review all issues,
including those of employees. The composition and selection of the committee or board would
need to be.agreed to by both labor and management. Issues to resolve would be election or
appointment, rotation of the committee, should labor be a part of the selection process, how often
the members should meet, equal representation from all ethic groups, etc.
Many AFSCME members do not believe the current Affirmative Action Program benefits them.
Many do not agree that the Affirmative Action Officers in their departments can or would
support their claims. Many believe that a committee is a better approach and would like such a
program established.
incerely,
IM HICKS, Business Agent
