SUBJECT:
SPECIFIC REQUEST(S)OR RECOMMENDATIONS &BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION
I. RECOMMENDATION:
Accept a donation of $10, 000 from Senior Home Delivered Meals
of Contra Costa Inc. for the Home Delivered Meals Program of
the County Department of Health Services - Public Health
Division. These funds were raised through this charitable
organization specifically to assist the County Home Delivered
Meals Program in purchasing meals and meal delivery equipment
to maintain or expand meal delivery services for the County's
homebound elderly population.
II. FINANCIAL IMPACT:
This $10, 000 contribution allows the County Home Delivered
Meals Program to deliver approximately 6, 500 additional meals
to the residences of the county's homebound elderly this
fiscal year, or up to 27 additional meals each day.
III. BACKGROUND:
Including this contribution, Senior Home Delivered Meals of
Contra Costa, Inc. has contributed $62, 000 to the County Home
Delivered Meals Program since 1991. The organization was
formed in 1990 by a coalition of public and private non-profit
agencies and advisory councils to raise charitable contribu-
tion for the purchase of additional meals and meal delivery
equipment to supplement the efforts of the County Home
Delivered Program. Participating organizations are: the
County Social Services Department's County Office on Aging;
the County Health Services Department's Senior Nutrition
Program; the County Advisory Council on Aging; the Senior
Nutrition Program Advisory Council; Family and Community
Services Inc. ; United Council of Spanish Speaking
Organizations, Inc. ; and West County Meals on Wheels.
The County Home Delivered Meals Program is the largest program
of its kind in Contra Costa County, delivering nearly 500 hot
nutritious daily meals to the residences of the homebound
elderly. The program has not received a significant government
funding increase in nearly eight years yet has expanded
services over 50% during that same period.
