HomeMy WebLinkAboutMINUTES - 09271994 - 1.21 IN THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS OF CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, STATE OF CALIFORNIA In the Matter of Honoring ) TOSCO REFINING COMPANY as the ) RESOLUTION NO. 941457 winner of the 1994 National Award for ) Excellence in Corporate Community Service ) WHEREAS, Tosco Refining Company, which is headquartered in Contra Costa County, has been selected by The National Points of Light Foundation for the 1994 Award for Excellence in Corporate Community Service for its commitment to focus its human and financial resources on local issues and problems, and WHEREAS, the men and women of Tosco, under the leadership of President and CEO James Cleary, have determined to serve children, education, substance abuse prevention, and persons with special needs as a matter of company principle; and WHEREAS, these focused areas are illustrated by the commitment of over 250 volunteers working on company time in over 90 schools in Tosco's Education Partnership Program and by providing financial grants to over 200 local nonprofit organizations; and WHEREAS, Tosco has donated land and facilities for sports and recreation activities that have benefitted thousands of children over the years; and WHEREAS, Tosco has provided motor fuels to support the Contra Costa Food Bank, scout camps, and water environment studies programs offered to school children on the Delta; and WHEREAS, Tosco has made a special effort to offer financial support through numerous scholarships to members of minority and disadvantaged communities; and WHEREAS, Tosco's concern for the environment has been demonstrated by support of the Lindsay Museum, the Nature Conservancy, the Delta Environmental Science Center, the East Bay Conservation Corps, and the Contra Costa Earth Day Festival; and WHEREAS, we extend our deepest appreciation and highest commendation to Tosco for its many generous contributions to Contra Costa County and for setting an example of excellence for others to follow. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors honors TOSCO REFINING COMPANY as the winner of the 1994 National Points of Light Award for Excellence in Corporate Community Service. PASSED AND ADOPTED ON September 27, 1994, by a unanimous vote of the Board members present.
