Dear sirs,
I live on 242 Marshall Drive, Walnut Creek. Behind my house, there are apartment
C.^,mple:':es. Bemeen the apai taieri complexes and my house there is an open space that belongs
to these apartment complexes. This open space is a hillside sloping down toward my house_ It is
covered with dry grass, brushes and shrubs_
The property divisions were made before the BART was put in. At that time, the entire
area was flat. During the construction of the BART, all the dirt was put in the space behind the
complexes. The result was a hillside with the complexes on the flat portion above the slope and my
house on the portion below the slope. Because of the high grade, the sloping portion of the land is
of no use to these complexes, and consequently, they do not maintain it. This land is always full of
debris, garbage, shrubs, dead tree branches, and dried grass.
Last year, one of the apartment complexes burned down to the ground. My house was one
of the homes that was threatened by the fire. If my neighbor had not hosed down the vacant land
behind my house, my house would have burned down, as well. This year, the fire department send
me a letter and asked me to clean the space, because they thought I owned it. A copy of this letter
is enclosed. This land needs to be landscaped to reduce fire hazard and avoid brush fires. The
apartment complexes do not want to spend any time or money to clean and maintain this land.
I Would like to request the city hall to reconsider the property divisions, and allow the lower
houses to ]'lave the land to landscape and reduce hazard from brush fires. This summer season has
been extremely hot, and I am very concerned about the risk of fire, specially, with the history of the
last year's fire. ,
Please consider this matter as soon as possible. I would like to be present in person at the
hearing. Please notify me of the time of the hearing.
