The following is a copy of my letter sent to the CC Times and the West
County Times. I hope that reading it will have some effect on Super-
visors who determine policy here. Perhaps it is time for my County to
take the same action that was recently taken by Alameda County.
Very truly,

Editor,
I am in favor of any event or practice that advances the custom of
an ethnic group unless it involves cruelty to people or to animals.
There are many organizations in the U.S. which help those from other
countries retain pride in their heritage. We can only profit from
the retention of worthwhile customs.
There is no place here however for anything that glorifies cruelty.
Let those practices remain in the country where they originated if
humans there enjoy seeing animals mistreated.
I read the Times ' article on Rodeos. I have never attended one as
I would be horrified when animals were seized by their tails and
thrown to the ground. I would not find pleasure in watohnmg bucking
horses as I know why they buck. Would they do so if they were not
harnessed into a strap fitted across the groin area? If they would,
why the tight strap?
Those who profess to love horses will surely not participate in an
event where their legs are lassoed, and they are, while running,
thrown to the ground. I was impressed with the love for horses pro-
fessed by triose featured iii the Tiuees' articlE. I cannot believe
that they would treat their mounts in such a manner.
Alameda County, due to the efforts of Eric Mills , Action for Animals,
has banned horse tripping and tail throwing of calves and steers.
Perhaps it is time now for Contra Costa County to follow suit.

Horseback riding skills should be what is stressed in Rodeos. Then
those who truly love animals could attend and enjoy the event. The
grace of rider and horse can be thrilling to watch.
We consider our country to be a civilized nation. Civilized behavior
precludes cruelly. That is reserved for barbarians..
Very truly,
signed as above
