CONTRA COSTA CO.
Dear Chairman Tom Torlakson and Members of the County Board of Supervisors:
COASTWEEKS, the nationally proclaimed period celebrating the beauty and importance of
our nation's coasts, is being held this year from Saturday, September 18 until October 12.
California is blessed with one of the most valuable and awe inspiring coasts in the world.
We ask you to support COASTWEEKS and to join us for California's ninth annual
Coastal Cleanup Day scheduled for Saturday, October 2, 1993.
The East Bay Regional Park District and the California Coastal Commission
are working together to again bring new excitement and more volunteers to this
environmental event. Last year the Cleanup set new records: 39,235 volunteers, who
removed 380,971 pounds of debris. This year is critical because we are expanding the
awareness of coastal pollution beyond the coast. Much of the trash and pollution on our
beaches is washed down from inland through gutters, stormdrains, streams and rivers. By
adding cleanups on waterways throughout the state, we'll show that individual people,
wherever they are,can help stop this pollution before it starts.
We hope you and your county will be a partner in this effort by:
*Proclaiming COASTWEEKS and COASTAL CLEANUP DAY in your
county with the suggested resolution enclosed,
*Personally participating in the Cleanup and other COASTWEEKS events,
*Encouraging your county departments to sponsor COASTWEEKS
activities and to support the volunteer Adopt-A-Beach cleanups.
Please contact Kathleen Fusek, East Bay Regional Parks District, 2950 Peralta
Oaks Court, P.O.Box 5381, Oakland, CA 94605 to help arrange official county
participation in the Cleanup and any presentation of the COASTWEEKS resolution. If
your county would like to create a COASTWEEKS activity other than a cleanup, please
complete the enclosed COASTWEEKS Activity Form and return it to the Coastal
Commission by July 30. We will distribute calendars of COASTWEEKS'activities and
cleanups in mid August.
COASTWEEKS and Coastal Cleanup Day encourage citizens of all ages to take personal
responsibility for the care and protection of our beaches, parks, waterways and
communities. We hope you will join us in making it another success.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the California Coastal Commission
Public Information Department at(415)904-5214. Thank you for your support.

COAS. TWEEKS ' 93
Get out your calendars! It is time to plan California's twelfth annual COASTWEEKS.
COASTWEEKS, the three week national celebration of our rocky shores and sandy
beaches, begins September 18 and lasts until October 11. COASTWEEKS focuses on
exciting and creative events that promote a public awareness of our precious and
fragile shoreline and increase citizen participation in efforts to improve our coastal
environment.
Last year during COASTWEEKS kids and adults cleaned creeks, lakes and beaches.
Kids made microscopes and videos, and families took cruises along the California
coastline. A few brave beachgoers even raised money for Adopt-A-Beach by
swimming around a portion of Catalina Island, and they're going to do it again this
year! California looks as if it's going to experience one of the warmest summers
ever! What better place to be than the cool coast celebrating and hosting something
fun and educational in honor of our wonderful shores. See the reverse side for
some dynamic COASTWEEKS ideas!
If you'd like to see your event in the COASTWEEKS' calendar, please fill out the
enclosed activity form. Please fill out one activity form for each workshop or event. A4. Ir
The deadline for COASTWEEKS activity response forms is J pace in t e
calendar is limited, so please return your forms promptly to insure publication in
the calendar. You can FAX your response to Candice Brown at (415) 904-5400. If you
have any questions, please call us at (415) .904-5216.
If hosting an activity isn't your speed, then come join the more than 40,000 people
who participated last year and clean the beach. The ninth annual California Coastal
Cleanup Day is October 2 this year. We moved the date from September to October
so more Californians can get involved. This is your chance to pay tribute to your
state's beautiful and bountiful rivers, lakes, streams, wetlands,,bays and beaches. So
don't be left inland. Get out to the coast, the lake or the bay. It's not just beaches
anymore!
Why isn't it just beaches anymore? The beach begins at your front door. Trash
travels to the beach from.various sources like gutters, storm drains, streams, and
rivers. We're expanding,'this year you don't have to look far to find a spot near you.
So what's stopping you? Get some friends together, pick a location, plan a picnic,
and call your coordinator on the enclosed list to get involved in California Coastal
Cleanup Day.
Thanks, and See you at the Beach...River...Bay...
CREATE A COASTWEEKS ACTIVITY
Below are some NEW creative ides for COASTWEEKS events that you, your
organization, your school, or your city can sponsor. Don't let this limit your
creativity. Have fun designing your own event!!!
• Get a Birds eye view of an estuary. Organize a canoe or kayak trip through an estuary. A great way
to celebrate National Estuary Day which falls within COASTWEEKS.
• Family Day at the Reserve. Speakers, hay rides, boat rides, tours, field trips, tidepool walks and
activities will make it a day for all ages.
Nature games!!! Build marine totem poles like the earlier tribes who inhabited our great state once
crafted. Make fish paintings with natural pigments. Experience science and art at work and play!
•"Tidepool tactics for the classroom" Plan field trips for teachers, educators, and high school students.
• "SAVE OUR SEAS". Trainers can host a curriculum workshop in honor of this national recognition of
the coast and use the COASTWEEKS calendar as an additional teaching resource. Have fun teaching in
the sun. Have the workshop outside or at the beach.
• Starting and maintaining a home aquarium.Aquariums follow the state of Maine and host a free
workshop for those of us that don't have BLUE THUMBS.
• Lighthouse open house. California has some of the most beautiful and historically rich lighthouses
in existence. Work with the State Park, AYH, or IYH to arrange a tour or weekend trip to a lighthouse.
• "Seals Skills?" Schedule a discussion with a marine mammal trainer from one of the marine theme
parks or invite schools, service clubs or individuals to hear.the behind the scenes scoop on seals.
• By the Sea By the Sea By the Beautiful Sea. By showcasing nautical works, maritime history,or
significant coastal archeological finds, art galleries or museums can join in the COASTWEEKS spirit.
*Whale watch. Bird watch.Dolphin.watch.So much can be seen by opening our eyes.
• Recycling Regattas.
*Libraries can display famous literature with sea themes, such as Moby Dick or Sinbad of the Seven
Seas or One Thousand Leagues Under the Sea. Readings, poetry contests, and craft displays can
compliment the COASTWEEKS exhibit.
• Oil Spill Response Demonstrations can get the community involved in emergency response by showing
them what to do and telling them how to get more involved in case of an emergency.
• Why Knot?Sailing techniques, safety,or just plain knot-tying techniques can get people of all ages
excited about COASTWEEKS.
*Creating Treasures from the Sea. Hand craft shell necklaces or earrings or driftwood nic nacs. Paint
with sand or raku pottery on the beach. The sea has many treasures for those who wish to see.
