SUBJECT: County One-Half )
Sales Tax Election ) RESOLUTION NO. 93/477
The Board of Supervisors of Contra Costa County Resolves That:
The State of California has extended the percent sales tax
through December 31, 1993, for the purpose of funding public
safety services, and the State has placed on the ballot for the
November 2, 1993, statewide special election for voter approval
Senate Constitutional Amendment 1 (Chap. 41, Stats . 1993-
Proposition 172 ) , which would if so approved further continue the
percent sales tax. This Board of Supervisors is authorized by
the provisions of Revenue and Taxation Code section 7285 (S .B.
509-1993 ) and related sections to enact a sales (transactions and
use) tax, provided that the voters of the County approve the
same .
If the statewide sales tax extension (Proposition 172 ) is
not approved by the state voters, the majority of voters in each
county may approve a local sales tax within specified rates . It
appears desirable to request the approval of this County' s voters
for the continuation of the tax at the November 2, 1993, election
as an alternative measure in the event that the voters on a
statewide basis do not approve Senate Constitutional Amendment 1
(Proposition 172) at the same election.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED AND ORDERED by the Board of
Supervisors of the Contra Costa County as follows :
1 . A special election is hereby called to be held on
November 2, 1993, throughout the entire County of Contra Costa,
said election being hereby consolidated with the State of
California Special Election to be held on said date throughout
the State of California, said special election to be held in
conjunction therewith and insofar as the territory in which
elections are to be held is the same; to wit, within the
boundaries of the County of Contra Costa, State of California .
2 . The election shall be held in all respects as though
there were only one election in accordance with the provisions of
section 23314 of the Elections Code of the State of California.
When the results of said special election are ascertained, the
Registrar of Voters (Elections Department) is hereby authorized
and directed to certify the same to the Board of Supervisors of
the County of Contra Costa.
3 . Except as the proposed measure may be revised or
modified by this Board on August 10, 1993, the Elections
