CLERK BOARD OF SUPERVISORS
CONTRA COSTA CO.
Dear Supervisor Torlakson:
I am writing in regard to the Board of Supervisor's recent decision to draft
an ordinance to exclude non-union companies from doing business with the
county. I would oppose this ordinance for the following reasons.
First, it is disciminatory. It will penalize unfairly those businesses and
workers who exercise their right to choose not to have a union. We have
already seen business flight from California, let's not add another reason
for businesses to go elsewhere.
Second, goods and services provided by union only businesses do not
automatically translate into the best quality. Only free, unhindered
competition insures that a business will strive to produce the best.
Third, it is, again, competition that assures the County will be getting
the best value for each tax dollar. Eliminating a whole segment from
competing weakens the ability to get the best deal.
In November voters are going to be asked to approve a permanent one half
cent increase in the sales tax. If they perceive government is not doing
everything possible to insure receiving the best value from current taxes,
there certainly will not be support for providing more tax dollars.
I urge you not to pass any ordinance that would restrict free enterprise
in this county.
Yours truly,
'oo i s
