OF
CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, STATE OF CALIFORNIA
In the Matter of Proclaiming )
September 19-25, 1992, as FOOD ) RESOLUTION NO. 92/615
FESTIVAL WEED in Contra Costa )
County )
Diet is understood to play a considerable role in either the
promotion of health or the progression of disease and that diets
high in saturated fat, cholesterol, and sodium are increasingly
associated with the development of heart and blood vessel diseases
as well as many other chronic illnesses. The American Heart
Association has a long history of educating the public on the
benefits of a healthful diet and now recommends that healthy
individuals reduce total fat intake to no more than 30 percent of
calories and yet, on the average, Americans get about 37 percent of
their calories from fat.
Nearly one quarter of the population is afflicted with one or more
forms of cardiovascular disease and one in five children under the
age of ten exhibits one or more risk factors (including obesity,
sedentary lifestyle, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol)
associated with the development of heart disease. In Contra Costa
County, almost 2,500 people die of cardiovascular disease or stroke
each year.
The American Heart Association will hold its eighth annual Food
Festival to provide education programs and focused awareness
activities designed to make the public more mindful of the
importance of healthful nutrition as well as motivate individuals
to take steps in lowering saturated fat and cholesterol in their
diets.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors
proclaims September 19-25, 1992, as FOOD FESTIVAL WEEK and urges
all citizens to take advantage of the information and programs
offered by the American Heart Association as well as to pledge to
follow one or more helpful recommendations from the American Heart
Association aimed to reduce saturated fat and cholesterol
consumption.
