HomeMy WebLinkAboutMINUTES - 08111992 - 1.43 I,43 IN THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS OF CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, STATE OF.CALIFORNIA In the Matter of Proclaiming ) August 29, 1992 ) Resolution No.: 9 2/S 4 4 Pioneer Cemetery Day in;: ) Contra Costa County ) WHEREAS Pioneer Cemetery, formerly known as the Pacheco Cemetery and the IOOF Cemetery, marks 'its 130th anniversary as the final resting place for generations of Contra Costa County residents; and I; WHEREAS Pioneer Cemetery received its first small, sad burial when William Payton Johnson, the one-year-old son of S.W. and A. E. Johnson, was laid to rest on a knoll at the common fence line of thie Loucks and Tormey family properties in Pacheco on Blum Road; and WHEREAS Pioneer Cemetery was usually called Pacheco Cemetery by local residents before the 1900's; WHEREAS Pioneer Cemetery came to be known as the Odd Fellows Cemetery when George Loucks deeded one and one half acres to the Odd Fellows of Pacheco in 1901, followed by a donation of three and a half acres by the Tormey family in 1903; and WHEREAS Pioneer Cemetery is the final resting place for such County notables as 11 Joseph Boyd, the first mayor of Concord, many members of the Loucks family, early settlers and jazz pianist Dave Brnbeck's mother and grandmother; and WHEREAS Pioneer Cemetery represents one of the last remaining vestiges of the historic town of Pacheco) where early American settlers and more recent residents, prominent people, and those less well known, all have share the same hallowed ground in the Pioneer Cemetery. i NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of the County of Contra Costa, California, hereby PROCLAIMS August 29, 1992, Pioneer Cemetery Day in ii Contra Costa County, and COMMENDS the families of the deceased and members of the ii community who are interested in the cemetery's history for its preservation and care. I� PASSED and ADOPTED this eleventh day of August, 1992, by unanimous vote of the Board members present.
