TO: California County Boards Of Supervisors
SUBJECT: Federal System of Highway Mileage Markers and Exit Numbers
FROM: California Travel Parks Association
Our association has been working for some time to get the California Department of
Transportation (CALTRANS) to adopt the Federal System of Highway Mileage
Markers and Exit Numbers. That systeh! is currently used by all of the other 47
colitiguous states. It is our opinion that the Federal System would be considerably more
useful to the traveling public in locating tourist services and or reporting highway
emergencies.
The County of Riverside, California Ambulance Association, California Tow Truck
Association, California Travel Industry Association, and CTPA have already passed
resolutions supporting the efforts. A letter dated Julie 4, 1992 from Ken Steele, District
Director of CALTRANS, states: "Caltrans will continue to consider this Post Mile
modification as a potential project; and when the public interest becomes high enough,
a proposal to make these recommended changes will be presented for further evaluation."
We ask that your County=Jom Riverside County_and,others_encouragmg CALTRANS to
i adopt the Federal Systeiil. I"have enclosed a copy of-tlie Riverside County resolution and
'-a sheet showing both the proposed and current signing. :Please--fcitWard- copy of any
resolution-your-county-play-pass-to-tlle-above-address:
We are also seeking to raise the level of"public interest" through an extensive petition
drive with RV parks and campgrounds, RV Clubs, other associations, restaurants, etc.
We will also be sending news releases to newspapers, radio, and TV stations. In
addition, we are encouraging our members to use letters to the editors of local papers, to
call radio talk shows, and to write their State Assemblyperson and Senator.
It is hard to understand why CALTRANS has clung to their antiquated system.
California highways use the most difficult-to-understand system of marking in the entire
nation. In a joint report to the Legislature by the California Highway Patrol and
Department of Transportation dated January 1991, the issue is discussed in the following
statements: "A second problem associated with verification is the ongoing problem of
inaccurate reports with respect to location. Motorists making calls from callboxes often
lack sure geographical references and experience some difficulty in describing the
location of the incident." One of the reports recommendations is to "improve freeway
y mile post markings for easier reading and regular spacing to improve the basis of
identifying incident locations."
We will appreciate your County's assistance in this effort and thank you for your
consideration of this resolution.
Sincerely,
MERLYN McINTYRE, iairman JOHN F. IMLER, Director
