HomeMy WebLinkAboutMINUTES - 09171991 - 1.15 THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS OF CONTRA COSTA COUNTY,CALIFORNIA IN THE MATTER OF RESOLUTION NO. 91/613 Commending the United Council of Spanish Speaking Organizations for their Outstanding Commitment to Serve Our Youth WHEREAS, the United Council of Spanish Speaking Organizations (UCSSO) has been involved in youth programs since the organization was established in 1965 offering valuable opportunities for young people with scholarships, employment experience and leadership training; WHEREAS, UCSSO provides services in West and Central Counties under the Youth Connection Program funded by the City of Richmond and the METAS Program funded by the Hispanic Community Fund Foundation in San Francisco. These programs provide tutoring and counseling services working with parents and the entire family using a mentorship model program. UCSSO work with youth served by their Head Start Program in East County with many of the youth volunteering their time in the centers. UCSSO also sponsors ten to twelve youth each year for summer employment through the Neighborhood Youth Corps of the County Superintendent of Schools; WHEREAS,this year,with United Way funding,UCSSO sponsored local youth to attend the Future Leaders of America,Latino Youth Leadership Program. Twenty-two young delegates attended the Future Leaders of America Leadership Camp from August 4 to August 10, 1991, where they received leadership training to develop the understanding, skills, and experience to help them make positive impacts in their homes,schools and communities. The following young people attended this year's leadership camp: Veronica Agraz,Bertha Ayala,Oliva Barcerias,Ignacio Barragan, Christina Bustillos, Gemma Concepcion, Delesus Duperroir, Elizabeth Fernandez,Daniel Flores, Wendy Flores,Milen Foster, Christina Gutierrez,Luis Iniguez,David Lujan, Monica Navarro,Monika Olveda,Alejandra Palomino,Jesus Partida,Joaquin Perez,Patty Perez, Catalina Ramos,and Noe Torres. WHEREAS,because of this positive learning experience provided by UCSSO,these young people will have the opportunity to make a lasting impact on their families and communities; NOW,THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED,that the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors commends the United Council of Spanish Speaking Organizations for its dedicated commitment to our youth and for accepting the challenge to encourage and prepare young Latinos for effective and responsible citizenship and leadership. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors congratulates and honors these young people selected to participate in this year's Latino Leadership Conference for their outstanding efforts to strengthen their leadership skills and extends to all them best wishes for continued successes.
