Since children have no political influence or economic power of their own, their welfare depends on the care and thought adults give to them. An increasing number of Contra Costa's children are in trouble. Six percent of the county' s population lives in poverty; 24 percent of those are children. Many of these children suffer the effects of poor health, violence, abuse, homelessness, and alcohol and drug abuse. The well being of society depends on the future productive- ness of our children. and programs that serve these children must be preserved and strengthened. The Contra Costa Children' s Coalition will hold a forum on September 25 to discuss "Children in Danger: Facing the Fiscal Crisis," which is also sponsored by the Mt. Diablo Unitarian .Universalist Church Children' s Task Force and The Children and Youth Policy Project.. The Board of Supervisors wishes to lend its support and to urge the citizens of Contra Costa to make children and their families the first priority in this time of fiscal crisis.
