Kennedy University SPECIFIC REQUEST(S) OR RECOMMENDATION(S) & BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION I. RECOMMENDED ACTION: Approve and authorize the Chair to execute on behalf of the County, Unpaid Student Training Agreement #26-229 with John F. Kennedy University for the period July 1, 1991 through July 1, 1992 for provision of clinical experience for second year trainees in the Master's degree program in Clinical Psychology or Registered Marriage, Family and Child Counseling interns. II. FINANCIAL IMPACT: None. III. REASONS FOR RECOMMENDATIONS/BACKGROUND: The purpose of this agreement is to provide second year trainees in the Master's degree program in Clinical Psychology or Registered Marriage, Family and Child Counseling interns with the opportunity to integrate academic knowledge with application skills and attitudes at progres- sively higher levels of performance requirements and responsibility. Supervised field work experience is considered to be an integral part of both the educational and professional preparation. As a teaching hospital, Merrithew can provide the requisite field education, while at the same time, taking advantage of the students' services to patients. This program is expected to be of benefit to HIV impacted persons in Contra Costa County by providing them with access to mental health services. The participating trainees will learn case management skills, develop an awareness of HIV resources in this County, and will learn how to connect the client with the appropriate resources. They will develop a working knowledge of the psychosocial issues facing the HIV impacted individual and their significant others and will develop skills to work with these issues within the therapeutic relationship. The trainees will begin to understand how cross cultural issues and substance abuse can influence both medical treatment and therapy and will gain experience with dual diagnosis assessment and treatment. This agreement is prepared in the standard format approved by County Counsel 's Office and has been executed by the contractor.
