BACKGROUND: County employees have supported the Food Bank' s Holiday Drive in the past; however, the effort has been limited, to Health Service' s sites. A countywide effort would produce more for those in need. See attached letter. The Food Bank wants to drop off empty barrels on December 5 or 6 and pick up full barrels on December 20 or 23 at a single site. The Food Bank is asking the County' s help in distributing the barrels to 100-150 locations. General Services would lead the effort using the services of a crew leader and a Workfare crew. The approximate cost of the project would be $37-38 per hour for the crew leader for an 8 1/2 hour day and the operation of a vehicle for 1 1/2 hours of pick up and delivery of a work crew. February 4, 1991 Trevor Norman Supervisor Sunne McPeak 2301 Stanwell Drive Concord: CA 94520 Dear Trevor: We know that the potential exists to more effectively appeal to county employees to support the food drives we do during the holiday season. As with most of the "great potential" issues we face, however, the logistics of carrying off this appeal presents a major challenge. Since we are doubling the normal work load our staff and volunteers carry when we do the holiday season food drives, we need to find a way to minimize the impact additional food drives will have on their work load. If there is a way that you can help us consolidate an appeal to the entire county workforce, I believe we can dramatically increase the numbers of pounds of food we obtain to help those in need. We would like to organize a food drive to run from December 8 through December 20, 1991. We would like to have your help in allowing us to have a single site to drop off empty barrels (on December 5 or December 6) and having a single site to pick up the full barrels (on December 20 or December 23. ) If an individual collection point filled its' barrel before the final pick up date, we could pick these barrels up as needed. I would appreciate it if you could talk this over with Sunne and let me know what you think. Give me a call if you have any questions.
