HomeMy WebLinkAboutMINUTES - 08061991 - 1.46 BOARD OF SUPERVISORS OF CONTRA COSTA COUNTY IN THE MATTER OF RESOLUTION NO. 91/495 Declaring August 13-19, 1991, as Peace Corps Week in Contra Costa County WHEREAS,the Peace Corps goals are as follows: Provide developing nations with skilled personnel, Provide people in developing nations knowledge about Americans and our way of life, Provide Americans with information about the people of development nations; and WHEREAS, the first group of Peace Corps volunteers entered service in August of 1961, with an assignment to Ghana; and WHEREAS,in the thirty years since then, 130,000 Americans have served and Peace Corps volunteers in 104 developing nations; and WHEREAS,presently,6,200 volunteers are in service in 73 nations,more countries than any other time in Peace Corps history; and WHEREAS,18,000 Californians have served as Peace Corps volunteers,more than any other state and far more than the state's proportionate share of population; and WHEREAS,Peace Corps volunteers today are a far more representative group of U.S. citizens than at any previous time--nearly equally comprised of men and women,13%ethnic minorities, average age of 31 years, and more.than 10% 50 years of age or older; and WHEREAS,Peace Corps volunteers have taught more than 5 million people to read, have developed over 300 textbooks, benefitted 14 million people with improved water and sanitation services as well as health education programs. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT THE BOARD OF SUPERVI- SORS OF CONTRA COSTA COUNTY,CALIFORNIA,does hereby proclaim the week of August 13 through August 19,1991,as Peace Corps Week in Contra Costa County,in acknowledgement of the valuable services Peace Corps volunteers provide to the developing nations of the world and their significant contribution toward world peace and brotherhood.
