HomeMy WebLinkAboutMINUTES - 09111990 - S.2 IN THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS OF CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, STATE OF CALIFORNIA In the Matter Supporting ) the Department of Transportation ) Resolution 90/59 1 Tree Planting Project Along ) I-580 ) WHEREAS, the California State Legislature, among other governmental agencies, has declared 1990 to be the "Year of the Oak", and WHEREAS, the California Oak Foundations, in concert with public agencies and private organizations throughout the state, is encouraging planting and preservation of this characteristic California tree; and WHEREAS, the California Department of Transportation has determined that it is feasible to plant and maintain oak trees at a location on State Route 580 in Hayward, alongside the mound containing remnants of the Oakland Cypress structure, which was destroyed in the earthquake of Oct. 17, 1989; and WHEREAS, planting these trees would enhance the appearance of the Cypress structure disposal site and the highway, while also honoring the memory of the Cypress Structure earthquake victims; and WHEREAS, Contra Costa County works actively to beautify the region and strongly encourages other agencies' efforts in this regard; THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors commends and supports the proposal to plant oak trees at the Cypress Structure disposal site on Highway 580 as a way of beautifying the highway and increasing the numbers of oaks; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors hopes that this will serve as a pilot project to encourage additional planting of oaks and other native species alongside highways throughout the state.
