HomeMy WebLinkAboutMINUTES - 09111990 - S.1 IN THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS Of ,CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, STATE OF CALIFORNIA In the Matter Supporting ` ) the Preservation of. ) Resolution 90/5 90, California`'s Oak Woodlands WHEREAS, California's oak trees are characteristic of the East Bay's landscape: golden hills dotted with `deep. green trees; and WHEREAS; 'oak woodlands provide critical habitat for hundreds of: species of wildlife, and visual enjoyment, to residents and visitors to the region; and WHEREAS, more than one mi11. on' acres of oak woodlands have' been lost since 1945, and the losses continue due to intensive conversion to agriculture, :firewood demand and urban encroachment; and WHEREAS, there are only 2.74,000 acres of valley oak left i'n California, ,a tree unique-to this state. and most vulnerable to extinction; and WHEREAS', several species of oak do not appear to.. be regenerating; .an'd MHEREAS;, the'.continued-existence of. oak woodland .is critical to the 'ecol,ogi•cal diversity ,of 'the region, and the:. loss of this . resource in adjoining lands indicates a deteriorating •relationship with our environment; .and WHEREAS, the state. Board 'of Forestry .has undertaken a program of development; extension and research concerning California's oak woodlands; and WHEREAS, 'tho State. Legislature.,,-among other governmental agencies, has declared 1990 .to be the "Year of the 'Oak"; THEREFORE, BE IT -RESOLVED, that the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors commends, -supports and joins in these regional and statewide efforts to preserve and increase the numbers of our. magnificent native oaks, especially during this fall season, .when acorns are gathered and planted to- insure;, a new generation of beautiful trees.
