Treatment of Whales at Marine )
World/Africa USA )
On August 25, 1989 , two beaked whales beached themselves on the
coast of San Francisco. They were transferred to Marine World/
. Africa USA for treatment and have been affectionately named
Nicholas and Alexander by those caring for them. These two
whales have captured the hearts of animal lovers everywhere as
they struggle to survive against all odds.
In the course of treatment for Nicholas and Alexander, two
Concord physicians, Dr. Murray Sheldon and Dr. William Sweezer,
and Dr. L. "Skip" Jones -of Vallejo have volunteered their time,
talent, and expertise to assist veterinarians and other experts.
Because of their skills in prolonging the whales' lives, our
knowledge of beaked whales has increased and will provide
invaluable data for whale experts for years to come.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of Supervisors that
the citizens of Contra Costa County commend Drs. Sheldon,
Sweezer and Jones for their humanitarian efforts in treating
Nicholas and Alexander.
PASSED AND ADOPTED ON September 12, 1989, by a unanimous vote.
