This class shall be exempt from the Merit System. � ' 2. Compensation for this classification shall be set by the Board of Supervisors. Effective Oct. 20, 1989the salary shall be Cl ldl§ /$2778 per month). 3' Persons appointed to this class shall be employed for a three month limited term assignment. Appointments may be renewed by approval of the Public Defender up to three additional times to a maximum of four . limited term assignments. 4' Employees in this classification shall be entitled to the following benefits: � '- ' � a' Employees are entitled to accrue paid time off at the , � rate of 3'33 hours per month' Accruals begin on the date of ' appointment. Accruals for portions of a month shall be in minimum . amounts of one /l\ hour calculated on the same basis as for partial compensation. Paid time off may be taken in ono-half (1/2) hour � increments but may not be taken during the first three months of � employment. This paid personal � leave is separate from paid time off and will be accounted for accordingly. Upon separation from County service, there shall be no / payoff for unused personal leave credits. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: Individuals are appointed to this exempt classification in the Public Defender's Office on a three month limited term basis. Primary emphasi-s is on the assignment of less difficult criminal cases in which an incumbent serves as defense counsel for indigents charged with a triable offense. This class is distinguished from Deputy Public Defender I in that incumbents of that class are employed on a permanent basis. TYPICAL TASKS-- Interviews and advises defendants or individuals in regard to criminal charges or prospective criminal complaints; advises clients on legal rights; analyzes case material after appropriate investigations; conducts legal research as required; prepares cases for presentation in court; appears in court and represents defendants at court hearings; confers with prosecuting staff, probation authorities and court officials to discuss pleas, modification of charges, presentation and examination of documents and materials prior to trials; prepares and submits documents regarding application for probation, appeal of court findings, writs and other legal documents on behalf of defendants; writes and/or dictates correspondence and reports. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: License Required: Valid California Motor Vehicle Operator's License. Registration: Active membership in the State Bar of California. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of legal principles and their application; knowledge of criminal law and its application; knowledge of trial and hearing procedure and rules of evidence; knowledge of legal research methods and the ability to perform research; knowledge of county government functions; ability to analyze and apply legal principles, facts, evidence and precedents to legal problems; ability to present statements of law, fact and argument clearly and logically in written and oral form; ability to maintain harmonious and cooperative relationships with fellow staff members, other personnel and the general public.
