FROM: Gary Villalba . tra
Veterans Service Officer
`✓V' VLa
DATE: August 29, 1989
SUBJECT: POW/MIA Week, September 11, 1989
SPECIFIC REQUEST(S) OR RECOMMENDATION(S) & BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION
RECOMMENDATION:
Proclaim the week of September 11, 1989 as "POW/MIA Week in
Contra Costa County" and observe Friday, September 15, 1989
as "National POW/MIA Recognition Day" as declared by
President Bush.
Acknowledge receipt from the County Veterans Service Officer
of POW/MIA flags to be raised in each supervisorial district
to pay tribute to all POW/MIA' s from all wars to show that
they are not forgotten by the citizens of Contra Costa
County.
FINANCIAL IMPACT:
None.
REASONS FOR RECOMMENDATION:
Supervisor Tom Powers, District I, on May 1, 1989 dedicated
a POW/MIA flag to fly permanently at the Bay Municipal Court
in Richmond.
The League of Families in. Washington, D.C. indicates there
are 2 ,340 MIA' s still unaccounted for in Southeast Asia as
of August 22, 1989 . In addition, the Department of Defense
confirms that 8,177 MIA' s from the Korean War and 78 ,750
MIA' s from World War II are still unaccounted for.
Communities throughout this nation are dedicating these
flags in public locations until there is a full accounting
of all POW/MIA' s . By placing a flag in each of the five
supervisorial districts, Contra Costa County now joins this
united effort.
